GV Suns Future Forum - thank you
Thanks to everyone who completed our online survey and came along to our Future Forum on Tuesday night. The ideas and enthusiasm to help our young club grow and succeed was fantastic.
For those of you who couldn't make it here is a quick recap...
A round 50 parents, players and supporters began the Forum by discussing what we wanted from the meeting and what we wanted the GV Suns to look like in 5 years time.
From there we walked through the membership survey results - with more than 90 parents, players and supporters taking the time to complete the survey we had some great material. We briefly touched on the outcomes and proposals included in the FFV's recent review of football in Victoria, and we wrapped up by workshopping 5 major themes that emerged through the survey and were re-confirmed on night. The key topics were:
- Financial viability and transparency
- Better relationships and cooperation with BASL, SJSA and Council
- Attracting and developing the best talent in our region
- Attracting and developing coaching talent, and
- What skills and experience do we need on the board and how urgently?
The workshop exercise asked two questions:
- If we are doing it right, what does it look like?
- What should we keep / stop / start doing to get there?
In a 90 minute meeting (plus 15 minutes of extra time) we covered a wide range of topics with some quality, robust discussions amongst the participants. Our Board members were tasked with listening, scribing and in our final exercise it was their job to report back to the room what they had heard.
What happens next?
As a Board we have given a commitment to take your feedback and prepare a three year business plan that we will present to the membership. We intend to hold a further Forum during November to hear your feedback on the draft business plan and to confirm that we are responding to your concerns and progressing your ideas.
In addition to capturing feedback from members, we have also begun conversations with our other key stakeholders. Our aim is to build stronger relationships and to set priorities for the next 12 months as we head into a period of substantial change to the overall NPL structure and football in Victoria. This includes our BASL and SJSA co-tenants and Council.
If you couldn't make it to the Forum and you would like to know more about what was discussed, the survey results or the process for developing our business plan please contact Club President Mick Crisera. The forum was the start of the conversations - not the end.
You can help us build a stronger club - survey
Among the many suggestions from the Forum was the proposal that we survey the club membership to understand the skills and experience that's out there and how we can tap into it to address our non-football and off the pitch challenges. So here goes... another survey ...but as you will discover we are also looking to create opportunities for a lot of people to do a little so please don't be afraid!
Six Suns selected in State Squads
GV Suns' Gerald Corbo and Hassan Al Hilfi have been selected in the U13 squad for the FFA National Youth Championships for boys with Christian Corso, Kai Lyster, Garang Kuol and James Nieuwenhuizen selected in the U14 squad. Reece Reedy has also been named as emergency for the U13 squad.
Over the past few weeks our TIDC participants had the opportunity to trial for selection in the 2018 U13 and U14 Victorian Country squads. The squads will compete at the National Championships later this month at Coffs Harbour.
It was an extremely challenging selection process across multiple weekends at Darebin, with the definition of country including more than a few outer Melbourne suburbs and as a result, players from metro clubs including Melbourne City, Victory and South Melbourne. As the call back process continued the overall numbers were whittled down to the final 17 in the U13 squad and 17 for the U14 squad.
Congratulations to all our successful boys and to everyone who took up the challenge to be a part of the process.
Unfortunately squad training commitments may mean the boys will not be available for our last home game and will finish their 2018 season this weekend against Langwarrin. We wish our boys every success at the National Championships.

We have begun the process to recruit a new Technical Director for season 2019 and beyond. At the same time we are also recruiting for coaches for our junior and SAP squads. Further information is available from our facebook page or contact Maria Sepe.
