From the President

This season we have seen more than a few of our founding juniors making their way into the U20s and senior playing groups. Last Saturday was a wonderful example of just how far we have come as founding juniors were the stunning bookends of our senior team – Alou up front creating magic, Lucas in goals perfecting the dark arts of goal keeping and Fraser Gosstray weaving chaos in between. As president I couldn’t think of a prouder moment in our club’s short history.

Creating pathways for our local talent is the reason we exist. Without an NPL club our local kids would not have the thrill or opportunities that come from playing the best in the state each and every week.

Unfortunately, from time to time, we also play squads and sometimes clubs that reflect some of the worst aspects of parental expectations and supporter conduct.  As a board and a club we must be vigilent to ensure these behaviours do not infect our club and become our accepted norms.

Each year our club communications include reminders of what is expected from players, parents, supporters and club coaches and officials.  The reminders are drawn from our mandatory FFA/FFV codes of conduct.

As we said last week, as parents and spectators we have a duty to set the standard we expect from our junior players. We have repeatedly stated that if it’s a red card on the pitch, let's not do it, allow it or condone it happening off the pitch!

When parents and supporters act inappropriately they give license to their kids to do the same - but the kids cop the consequences.

As the game pressure builds, instead of out-playing the opposition and putting the game beyond doubt by converting that penalty or making that goal, the players are sucked in by the spectators' behaviours and language and their respect for the ref, linesmen, opposition and even their own team mates and game plan disappears. If they are lucky it’s a warning and/or a yellow but when the team loses focus the misses and red cards are inevitable.

To put it simply, we cannot expect our kids to behave better than we do – so let’s make sure our behaviour lets our kids play at their mental and physical best.

I am calling on all players, parents and spectators to set the right example in two ways, firstly don’t do it and secondly don’t get drawn into it. And if we hold true to the idea that we train as we play, then our conduct must also extend to training sessions.

It can be difficult to not engage when you are being patronised by an ignorant individual or subjected to verbal abuse by a foul-mouthed bully but I implore you to take the higher road.

Instead, I encourage you to focus your attention on the brilliant emerging talent on display at all NPL clubs and the exciting future that lies ahead for our beautiful game.

Your sincerely
Mick Crisera

Respect the linesmen - or step up and do a better job!

Anyone who has ever acted as a team or operations manager will know that asking someone to be linesman is the worst part of your role. No one ever volunteers, people will even disappear when they see you coming.  It falls to the same people every week.

Why do we have to find lines each week? Why aren't they provided?
The FFV is responsible for allocating referees to all its competition matches but - especially in regional areas - there aren't enough qualified referees and linesmen for all the SJSA, BASL and NPL games. And the same issues can also crop up at away games.

Each week Operations Manager (Nick Corbo) checks the FFV allocations and if referees and linesmen are not allocated he acts promptly to source appropriately qualified alternates.  Unfortunately these plans may fall apart when games clash or if our ref-qualified juniors are asked to play up a level.  It also causes some angst for visiting clubs because only FFV appointed referees can wear their FFV referee kit.

What are we doing about it?
Over the past few seasons we have encouraged our juniors to complete their Referee Certificate and this has increased the number of juniors who are qualified to run the lines and also to referee our younger age (U12) NPL games.  But we continue to need assistance from club officials, spectators and parents to heed the call of their Team Manager and help out with running the lines.

What can you do?
  1. Respect the linesmen. Remember, they have volunteered and have probably been worn down by a begging and sometimes tearful team manager asking them to please, please, please take up the flag.
  2. Give it a go, some of our best volunteer lines people haven't grown up playing soccer and have given it a go simply because they know the kids can't play without a lines person.
  3. So often spectators feel the need to ask the linesman 'What was that for?'. Rather than interrupting the linesman's concentration how about you find the answer for yourself by completing the free, online Rules of the Game Certificate Course.

SAP take to the pitch

This week our Skill Aquisition Program (SAP) boys and girls took to the pitch for their first game against Shepparton United. Unfortunately our SAP coaches Louis Coyle and Sean Grant were unable to join us to see their hard work put into practice but GV Suns Technical Director Shaban Mehmet stepped in to coach the wildy enthusastic and skillful group.

Well done to everyone and thank you to Shepparton United.
In the absence of an official report we have included one provided by one of our SAP members (see below).

Talent Identification & Development Centre

Block 2 of TIDC commenced this Wednesday and will continue for the next 8 weeks, including another Gala Day at the FFV Training Centre In Darebin on Friday 13 July.

Block 2 player selection is invitation only and based on Block 1 performances, however talent identified players may be invited to join at the discretion of FFV or the Centre’s Head Coach.

The next 8 weeks will determine who will be selected into the Victorian squads to compete at the FFA National Championships in Coffs Harbour in late September.

Knee Pain?...it might be Osgood Schlatter syndrome

by Lynne Weir

Osgood Schlatter syndrome is another condition that is common in active adolescents.  It is a very painful knee complaint that is often related to growth.  The quads muscle surrounds the knee cap, patella, and joins into the shin bone, tibia just below the knee cap.  When the quads muscle straightens the knee it pulls on this bony area.  When there is a period of growth, bone length increases and soft tissue has to catch-up.  This creates the problem.

The symptoms of Osgood-Schlatter's include;
  • pain in both knees
  • pain when extending the knee and in squatting
  • pain running and going up and down the stairs
  • pain eases with rest
  • swollen tibial tuberosity

What to do?
Well, pushing through isn't the best course of action It is likely to make the inflammation worse!  See a physiotherapist or a sports medicine specialist for advice on activity modification, appropriate stretching and strengthening, and symptom management.  If severe, a period of rest from playing and training may be recommended, with a return to play plan advised.

Match Day Video

If  teams  would like to record this week's game please contact Lynne 0428503157.
Please bring a 16 GB USB for the footage to be loaded onto and returned for viewing.

Let me (Lynne) know when the coach would like to view with the team and we can organise a temporary TV set up, until a permanent one happens.

Match reports

SAP v Shepparton United

Rolf Nieuwenhuizen (6 yo SAP member) in place of an official report.

Tonight our SAP groups played our first game against Shepp United. We tried hard and communicated really well and that's why we won the game. After the game I had 3 sausages and chocolate cake. We had lots of fun.

U12s
Caleb Callum-Rua

Our boys played with the most determination and intensity as a team so far this year. You can see their development with every passing week. Last weekend we lacked our ability to finish our chances and focus for the whole game which allowed Kingston back into the game.

The focus for this week was to play out from the back by spreading our players out wide early when we had position of the ball and getting into a passing position and opening our bodies so that we are facing forward when receiving the ball.

On the weekend we demonstrated this perfectly - once our centre backs received the ball, our left and right backs dropped into clear wide positions facing forward and our centre backs played ther most advanced foot. This gave us a positve outcome moving the ball forward quickly with many scoring opportunities.

What really let us down is when we were winning we got lazy and lost our focus and this is why we conceded most of our goals on the weekend. The game was recorded and I recommend that all my boys watch the video and assess themselves on ways to improve their game so we can work  these over coming weeks.

U12s
Joe Worrall

Over the last few weeks Caleb and I have focused training sessions around playing the ball wide and how to best play out from the back.  Small sided games were played on Tuesday and Thursday sessions to allow the players to recognise where the space is and how best to utilise it in a game situation. The emphasis was on getting the ball out wide to wingers, who were restricted to two touch, and delivering crosses into dangerous zones within the box.

The focus was not only to use the wide men but then to make the box, staggering runs and playing the ball quickly and with purpose. The Under 12's also did some pattern work from goal kicks to understand how we should build play from our keeper. Checking off, taking the ball with the furthest foot so our team can attack the opposing goal and ball speed were stressed to the players.

On game days I have been pleased with performances because the players listen to each of their roles before kick-off and ask questions showing me that they want to learn and continue to grow as players. Overall I believe that the kids are developing and that we are adding different aspects to our game each week enhancing performances on the weekend.

U18s
Tommy Giuliani

The 18s took in Kingston City Sunday in what ended up a fiery game. This group has a really sharp focus on development, the goal being solely on producing NPL senior footballers. David Davkovski is doing a wonderful job of guiding these players for long term success.

It was a pleasure to assist Serks Aktas in coaching these boys on the weekend. It was a glimpse into the future of the club. The boys were encouraged to play posession football and they certainly did this in the first half. There was the intent to build up from the back and into the middle third and there were some lovely passing combinations into our attackers.

In the second half the game became stretched and there were more second balls and 50/50s to be won. We also scored two goals from a more direct long style that won’t serve these boys well in the long run but gave us some immediate satisfaction. The second half highlighted the hunger and intensity of some players which we were pleased to see. We need more boys who are prepared to meet the physical challenges.

These players must continue to knuckle down and work hard on their core skills. At this level of competition in all age groups we need to be comfortable on the ball in posession to be able to play senior football in NPL.
