GV Suns v Bentleigh Greens @ McEwen - Tuesday 1 May

Our Seniors host Bentleigh Greens - 2017 NPL champions - in our next round of the FFA cup.

Kick off at 7:30 pm Tuesday 1 May at McEwen Reserve.

Fair play on and off the pitch

Thank you to everyone who has come along to our junior and senior games. Everyone is enjoying our new facilities and we are well on the way to our goal of creating a welcoming and positive environment for local and visiting players, clubs and supporters.

We want to keep building this great atmosphere so its timely for us to provide a few reminders about the codes and rules that are part of all NPL club's licence obligations.

The FFV’s NPL 2018 Rules of Competition include the following:

“Acts of violence, discrimination and vilification are illegal acts in Victoria. It is a club's responsibility to report these to the appropriate legal authorities ...

Organisations that do not adhere to and enforce the Code will not be eligible for funding..., and any existing funding will cease.”

We are looking to all members of our club including our players, parents, supporters, officials, team managers and coaches to help us build the club we want to be on and off the pitch. If there is something that you think could improve please share it with us. We can’t fix something we don’t know about – and we have an obligation to address the matters reported to us.

When fans go feral...

Its our job to ensure the FFA National Spectator Code of Behaviour is followed at all GV Suns home games. The Code has 10 points that include:
  • Respect the decisions of the Match Officials, and teach children to do the same;
  • Never ridicule or unduly scold a child for making a mistake;
  • Not engage in discrimination, harassment or abuse in any form including the use of obscene or offensive language or gestures, the incitement of hatred or violence or partaking in indecent or racist chanting; and
  • It is the host Club’s responsibility to ensure this Spectator Code of Behaviour is implemented and enforced against all spectators.
So how do we ensure the Code is enforced?
Firstly each club must provide at least one marshal for each game – that’s a minimum of two marshals for games up to the NPL U20s and four are required for seniors games. Amongst their duties the marshals “where required, assist the Match Officials(s) to ensure a safe playing environment for all players, Club Officials and spectators.”

The marshal is your go to person for reporting any concerns about supporter/parent behaviour. The marshal can intervene directly or seek guidance from the Match Referee if he/she is unsure.  The marshals have absolutely no role in regulating the conduct of match officials – for example the marshal cannot regulate the conduct of the linesman if he is ‘coaching his team’, this is entirely the responsibility of the match referee but the marshal can bring it to the attention of the referee at a break in play eg half-time.

The Linesman also has the authority to advise the Match Referee if he/she or players are being subject to inappropriate behaviour for example a supporter yelling at a player or the linesman during play. A linesman stretching the flag across his/her chest is the signal for the Referee to speak with the linesman about the concerns.

If the marshal doesn’t take action please report your concerns to our Club Officials including Paul Uniacke and Nick Corbo. Given our NPL obligations we simply cannot allow inappropriate conduct.

David Davkovski

Nic name  Davko
Your early years
Where were you born? Where did you grow up? What schools did you go to? Shepparton
Shepparton
Shepparton High
Do you come from a soccer (or other sport) family or did you discover it?  Soccer Family, I wasn’t allowed to play any other sport
Where did you begin your soccer/sports career?  4 years old @ Lemnos Soccer Club
What position did you play? Why?  Sweeper (I could read the game very well)
What was the toughest or hardest thing you had to learn as a player? The hardest thing was hanging up the boots, the rest was easy because I love the game.
Which clubs/comps etc have you played at? What was the highest level? Played for many different clubs and leagues. Highlights were Vic state representative from u/12 to u/15, also played for Victorian Institute of Sport and Preston Lions in old NSL
Do you/did you have a pre-match routine or superstition? Always touch match ball before kick off
Did/do you play any other sports? Any big highlights? How does it inform how you coach? I was originally knocked back from VSF (FFV) when I went for my level 1 coach at 13 years old. They told me I was too young but I had it over ruled. I was one of the youngest coaches in Victoria.

Countless nights of no sleep from weeping skin as a result of slide tackling
Where is home now?  Kialla
Your thoughts on coaching
Which of your coach(es) (in any sport) had the greatest impact on you? Why? I have great respect for all coaches from all codes. Each coach is unique I despise coaches who think they know it all. Coaching is evolving, the landscape is changing, which is why it’s impossible to know it all.
Which coach(es) do you admire? Why?  If I need to single out a coach it would have to be Fabio Capello, he was my inspiration for coaching.
Are their any players you played with or against that stood out? Why? Many players, but I did enjoy playing with and against Vince Grella. A ferocious competitor who only wanted to win.
Why are you a coach? What made you want to take on the challenge? Do you have a coaching philosophy?

I think I just want to give back, and I can’t play anymore. My Philosophy is evolving as a senior coach, as a junior coach I have a different way to coach. I’m doing the 18’s now so I’m simply preparing players for senior football.

I’ll continue to develop young players to be the best possible player and person they can be. My players must try to play good football, and not revert to just booting the ball when the going gets tough. I believe I’m a tough coach because that’s how I was taught, my parents didn’t pay for my registration for me to mess about at training. A little bit of old school mentality here I guess. GV suns is the perfect vehicle for kids that want to take their football seriously so coaching any other way would not seem right.
What coach training, accreditation, licence etc have you completed(soccer and/or other sports)? FFA/AFC C & B licence coach
What pushes your buttons? My players know my expectations and what annoys me. But what really annoys me is the confusion in the game with today’s kids. If you want something bad enough you shouldn’t make excuses like ‘my coach is poor, I’m not learning anything’ - if they love football then nothing will get in their way.
A little bit more about you
Which leagues and clubs do you follow?  Liverpool
Family?  Wife Elishia, Children Lucas and Alexis
Pets?  Cat called Thunder
When I’m not coaching I’m… Working or parenting.
My day job – making disposable packaging. I’ve been working with SCS Plastics for 20 years. Our business has been operating since 1985 and proudly still an Australian manufacturing business.
My last dinner would be… Spent with my family wouldn’t matter about the food.
What are you aspirations for the GV Suns and soccer in the GV? Make it sustainable so my son has somewhere to play
Something else you want to share? Please say hello to me when you walk past me, introduce yourself
Something we don’t know about you? I love enduro, I have a KTM and love to ride in the hills/mountains
Do you have an inspiring quote or message? Your hero should be you in 10 years

Match reports

This year our match reports will rotate through the squads with two reports each week. This will allow our coaches to give greater perspective on what they are focusing on during each cycle - and how well its working on game days.

U14s
Tommy Giuliani

Our Suns 14s continue to impress in 2018 with another solid performance against talented opposition on last Sunday.

In training we have worked hard on our shape out of possesion, being compact and knowing which parts of the pitch to press and win the ball back. The concentration by the boys has been fantastic and they’re reading the triggers and moments in the game well. They’re understanding that we need to be 11 attackers when we have the ball and 11 defenders without the ball. Each player needs to be actively involved in the game  in every moment.

This has resulted in us still scoring goals but only conceding one goal in our last 3 games. We were too leaky in earlier games and the main objective remains the team/individual development. As I tell my players, if we perform well we give ourselves a chance, if we perform poorly we need to work harder and solve our football problems

On Sunday we face an opponent who has concede only 2 goals in 8 games. They don’t score freely either. This is a great new challenge for our players.H ow to break down a team who sit deep. We’ll need to be patient, use the full width of the pitch to seperate their back 4 and play in front of them side to side before making the killer pass and runs. I’m excited by the challenge facing the boys.

U16s
Paul Nieuwenhuizen

Over the past few weeks we have looked at changing the way we play. The focus will be on pressuring our opponents when they have the ball in their defence and trying to win it back quickly.  This change will take a few games to action. The coaching staff at the GV Suns believe that long term this will see a change in the players performance.

However, we must remember that at the end of the day, it is up to the player how they perform. While the coaching staff can prepare the players technically or tactically, and influence the Commitment, Communication, Concentration, Control and Confidence of the players, it is still up to the player on how they come prepared both mentally & physically for training and the game. If players are not properly prepared this will affect their and the team’s performance.
