SAP Suns shine at gala

Our SAP teams travelled to Darebin last weekend for their first gala weekend of the season. In rain, hail, wind and occassional sunshine the U9 and U10 teams played some great football. Thanks to Lewis Coyle and Sean Grant who not only coached our buys and girls but also refereed matches. For more photos from the day visit our facebook page.

Our U14s battled back from a difficult first half to win against Port Melbourne Sharks on Sunday. It was a very pleasing performance and fightback by our boys. We continue to play in a 4-3-3 formation with only one holding midfielder and we always try to get our fullbacks pushing high into the middle third in possesion. So we always  set up to play attacking football. With the windy conditions on Sunday we failed to adjust and stopped committing ourselves to play out of a high press. We also needed to keep the ball on the ground against the wind and build up patiently. We also, didn’t win the 50/50s and second balls. We were just a few steps “off”,not sharp and aggressive enough

Port scored two goals in the first half. Not through their brilliance though. The second goal was most disappointing as we lost possession high in our final third and decided to argue with a referee decision rather than play the whistle and win the ball back.

At half time the message was simple. In possesion increase our tempo, commit to our effective possession game, have the courage to play through a high press and attack relentlessly with penetrating forward passing. We also adjusted our pressing to win the ball back higher up the pitch and really squeezed our lines back to front.

These boys were magnificent in the second half. They hit 4 goals in a 15 minute burst to go from 0-2 down 4-2 winners. Most pleasing for the club was the fantastic contribution by Reece Reedy and Hassan Alhilfi stepping up from our U13s team. They were both class in those last 15 minutes. Well done boys.

U16s

After the week off to rest, the boys trained with the 18s and really worked hard.
We talked before the game about pressing Port Melbourne high up the pitch and winning the ball back quickly. We were soon rewarded for our efforts going up 1-0. However, our work rate fell away and we let Port Melbourne back into the game. This saw the mistakes creep in and we gave away a couple of goals to find ourselves down 2-1 at halftime.

Halftime saw the boys reminded of the need to maintain a high work rate, to not rush their decisions when playing the ball and look to play the ball forward. The 2nd half saw the team put in to practice what we talked about, with the team looking to play the ball forward to a teammate at all times, while pressing Port Melbourne quickly to regain the ball. This saw the team rewarded with 3 second half goals to come away with a well deserved win.
The effort showed what the boys can do when they work hard together.
