Farewell and thank you Tommy
We never want to lose good people, but this week, due personal issues, one of our long standing coaches Tommy Giuliani has decided to step down effective immediately. I, as a TD, have enjoyed working with Tommy because of his enthusiasm, willingness to learn and his love for the game. From all the GV Suns family Tommy, thank you for your dedication and hard work. YNWA
This is not acceptable!
This pic was sent in by the GV Suns members who took the time to help out with cleaning up the grounds after the matches on Sunday. It shows we have some pretty disrespectful behaviours amongst some of our junior player groups - and yes we know who you are!
No GV Suns player, supporter or member is above cleaning up after themselves - and if the message isn't getting through there are ways we can reinforce it with any repeat offenders! (The pic only shows some of the rubbish left behind)
Meet our SAP squads
Our SAP squads are a really exciting part of our GV Suns family - and we have some terrific young talent on the way through our Club.

A couple of very close games on the weekend and although neither team scored I think the kids can walk away happy with their own efforts. I asked the kids to relax on the ball which can be our down fall at times. I have introduced the K.I.S.S theory (parents if you don't know what that is ask your kids!).
Now for all who were watching the second game, I think we all can agree on just how good/outstanding/magnificent Hamish's efforts as Goal Keeper were pulling of some unbelievable saves! Zach has found his position as our 4th defender supporting the midfield.
Miles and Jeremy....what can I say? Think I'm going to start calling them the brick wall because of how well the work together in defence. This week I will be putting focus on our attacking half which will hopefully results with the ball in the back of the net.
I'd also like to congratulate Reece on making it to the next stage on his Vic Trials. He is a confident player and his movement on the ball really showed how important he is.
Parents thank you for your support with helping out game day duties marshals/lineman etc. It's been fantastic which makes my job and also Terry's job much easier. Would love to see everyone have a go at some stage.

The kids worked real hard today trying all of the things they have learnt over the passed 8 weeks. great effort today by all and some clear signs of improvement, one touch, playing triangle, 1v1, creating space, talking was all put in to a game great effort kids.

This week in training we worked on smart defending. Defending from the front, in numbers, not over committing, cutting out passing lanes and keeping our shape.
The game against Kingston City was a very good example of why we had practised the training that we had. They had more quality possession but we kept them to shots from outside the area and eventually created our own chances to go 1-0 up. We then created a few more quality chances and probably should have gone further ahead but they couldn’t be converted and we went in at half time still leading.
The second half was more of the same, Kingston with the majority of possession but we still created the best clear cut opportunities without converting. It was our own mistakes that gave Kingston their two best opportunities and they converted both to win this close game.
Although being disappointed not to have got a more positive result, we are not playing anything like we can and still have a lot of improving to do which is very exciting. Player for player, no team that we have played have had more quality than us, they are just working more as a team. This will be our next focus and goal. We need to keep possession for longer periods and play more as a TEAM!

It was a good hit out for the kids on Sunday. Kingston is always tough and they've been very good this year, one of their boys having bagged 16 goals thus far. Pre game we knew it would need a strong defensive collaboration to curb this attack. We did this well and I'm wrapt to see them continue to execute so many passing chains. They need to keep playing football.
I though we shaded them in the first half and I couldn't identify any 16 goal phenomenon amongst their group.
We were unable to play at the same level in the second half, but again whilst we struggled, the effort to defend and fight was there, we were compact and we only conceded a goal. We scored a goal on the counter late to level the game, a reward for not capitulating under pressure.
This was my last game as coach. I love all these boys and I'll continue to support and barrack. There's been some tough love earlier in the year as I believe in their ability. I also believe if they're allowed to train poorly they'll mostly play poorly, well below NPL level. They'll also be hard to watch. At the start of the year these boys trained poorly and found it difficult to play "football" as opposed to a preference for running with ball, dribbling, running into each other and then ultimately losing the ball continuously. There was lots of push back but I think it's been a worthwhile exercise persevering. There's no room for too much individualism in a team sport. I've never seen a player at a high level beat 11 opponents.
I wish them all the best for the remainder of the year and thank the GVSUNS, in particular Shaban Mehmet for the opportunity to coach. I've loved seeing the development of the players, many flourishing now; and the level in the NPL is amazing in comparison to anything else I've seen. I doubt anybody could argue otherwise.⚽️⚽️

The past week at training our focus has been winning the ball as soon as possible.
The game this week saw two evenly matched sides working to break each other down to create goal scoring chances. However, these were few and far between, with both teams working hard on winning the ball back as soon as they lost it. It was fantastic to watch from the coaches area. Both teams worked hard to apply pressure and upset each other though out the game.
Unfortunately, we conceded a goal after a very questionable call, when the opposition's linesman failed call a clear offside. This was not helped by the referee admitting the game moved too fast for him to keep up at times. This call spoiled what was a very good game.
While disappointed, the players kept working to create chances and nearly pulled a goal back late in the game.
A big thanks to Mitch and Josh from the under 14s for helping out. Their performance showed that any of the kids within the GV Suns are not out of their depth when asked to step up an age group to help out.
The result is a set back for the team from a ladder position but once again showed that the team is continuously improving each week.

"Be more concerned with your character than with your reputation. Your character is what you really are while your reputation is merely what others think you are." - John Wooden
There is a lot to say about the above quote. Now we have had a few days to reflect on how we played and acted to our opposition, team mates and your supporters on Sunday I think we can all say we let ourselves down. We not only want you to become good footballers at the GV Suns but we want you to become good people, and your character and integrity are at the heart of that. You must be humble in victory and gracious in defeat. We have full trust in the entire group to rise above this challenge and use this bump in the road as a test to overcome for the remainder of the year.
Sorry we missed your pic - next game please!

Training was great both nights. The boys put in a fair bit of effort and intensity was high at all times. We focused a lot on game play (possession, attacking, defending) and along with the Under 16's, myself, Glen, Nathan and Shabs were happy with their commitment.
Game day was our best performance to date. We did lose 3-2 in the end but we could easily have snatched the game from Kingston. Stats wise, Kingston did have more shots on goal and on target but goals win games and they failed to punish us.
The first half was very competitive and Kingston had some great chances to score due to their work rate. A lot of the time it felt like our boys were chasing shadows but we did look dangerous on the counter attack. We got the break through at the right time in the first half via Tommy Raditsas who was on the spot to follow up a shot from Hutchy that was saved by the keeper. Half time we were 1-0 up.
The boys had their heads pretty high going into the second half and Kingston still looked dangerous going forward but couldnt get the breakthrough they needed. Eventually we did concede and it was 1-1. A bit of Zach Hutchinson magic made it 2-1 to Suns and he could have buried Kingston with a second but unfortunately skied his shot. It proved costly as Kingston went coast to coast from the kick off and it was 2-2.
In the last 15 minutes both sides were feeling the effects of high intensity match and chances were end to end. In the last few minutes of the match we unfortunately conceded a third and that was the final score. GV Suns 2 - Kingston 3. Special thanks to Tommy, Vinnie and Kane from the Under 16's and Hutchy and TC from the 20's. BOG this week was Lucas Enders. Frustrated Kingston all game and was an absolute rock.
