Can you help with photos?

If you have photos from our games that you would like to share with us please send them through. Some weekends our volunteers are away or can't make it to every game so if you can help out please email your photos to operations@gvsuns.com.au.

Preparing for away games - S H E

Away games need more planning to make sure you arrive at the ground ready to play.
  • Sleep - at least 8 hours the night before your game (and that doesn't include travel time to the game).
  • Hydrate - no point guzzling once you get to the ground! If you are well hydrated, then an hour before your game (so around the time you need to be at the ground) you should be looking for the toilets not the canteen. Start the night before and keep it simple - water is just fine.
  • Eat - Eat a good carbohydrate based meal 2-3 hours before you play and follow it up with a lighter snack (eg bananas) at least an hour before kickoff. Don't rely on canteen at the game to provide breakfast - make sure you eat before you leave home and 'top up' once you are at the ground.
Arrive on time - all players are expected to be at the ground ready for warm up an hour before their game kick off. If you are running late call your Team Manager to explain.  At some of our away grounds parking and getting from your car to the ground can take much longer than you expect - please make sure you allow time.

Relax - you have done the training and the preparation - enjoy the game!

Which pitch?

Questions on Match Day pitch allocation come up at every home game. Spectators on MP2 look with envy at those in the grandstand seats, and players question why they’re not on main pitch, so hope this helps;

Prior to each home round Council advise Nick Corbo (junior operations manager) how many games can be played on each pitch and may also determine which age group plays where.  Sorry U12s - main pitch isn’t likely to happen.  A fenced area can’t be used and it’s difficult to move the small goals out of the way.

The GV Suns are happy to comply with this to maintain the quality of the pitches for the season.

With our first games away this weekend, we will be reminded of how lucky we are to have fabulous new pitches and grandstand!

Match reports

This year our match reports will rotate through the squads with two reports each week. This will allow our coaches to give greater perspective on what they are focusing on during each cycle - and how well its working on game days. This week it's our U13s and U15s.

This week our under 13s took on Murray United in-front of lots of supportive parents willing the the players on. Unfortunately the boys had a first half to forget and it was disappointing to see the lack of enthusiasm and energy during the first half. We were a few goals down within 5 minutes and from then on are heads went down and I could see the players hiding.

t half time I explained to the boys that the least I expect from them is to give it 110 percent to run, tackle, fight for each other, to communicate and actually work as a team and not individuals! A misplaced pass or a defensive error is something they can learn from and be rectified but not being bothered to win the ball back and helpout your team mates is not acceptable at any age group.

I was very proud of the response during the second half especially the first 20 mins where they showed so much fight, started to chase balls down, have a go and showed that when they do that we can be competitive. It was 0-0 for the first 20mins of the second half before the Murray boys scored a few more to make it a difficult afternoon for everyone to watch and be a part of.

During the first 3rd of the season we have been working on playing out from the back and at times we have really struggled to grasp the idea and have leaked a fair few goals from this but I am confident that the boys are learning, getting slowly better every week and trying to play the right brand of soccer so they can be set up for long term success in the future at whatever level they end up playing.

I have seen some really good combination plays to get us playing from our goalkeeper but we turnover the ball in this area too - the more comfortable the boys get the less it will happen and it will take time. My objective isn’t about winning games at this age it’s about getting as many of this boys to the next level by being comfortable to play socce.

I do understand that it’s not nice for the boys to lose every week, me more than anyone hates losing but I would rather them lose at this age than them get turned away from an A League club when they are older because they cannot play a 10 yard ball in a defensive area and that’s why I will keep persisting.

I would like to mention also that I appreciate everything the parents do for the boys and the club as a whole and your support is appreciated and just to remind you that please do not hesitate to contact me via phone, text, email or at training if you have any concerns or queries I’m very approachable and will be honest with my answers about any subject that may arise.

Thanks Billy

Last week at training we worked on Combination play building through the midfield on Tuesday and then Pressing high up the pitch denying time and space on Thursday.  Thursday’s session was quite problematic due to pitch issues – we seemed to be shunted from pitch to pitch and this is not an ideal situation.

On game day, for the first time this season, we had our full squad available, the guys all seemed to be in relaxed mode being in the middle of school holidays……unfortunately, we let a great opportunity slip with how we performed during the game.  We certainly dominated for the first 20-25 mins and created 5 gilt edged 1 on 1 opportunities with their Keeper, but alas we just couldn’t convert anything.  Against the run of play we allowed them a goal and perhaps they should’ve had another as well – as we allowed them to gain confidence by our luck lustre pressure.  Another goal was gifted to them early in the second half and we couldn’t recover from there, going down 2 nil.

I mentioned to them afterwards that it was disappointing to lose the way we did…..we were much better than them early and if we had converted a couple of those opportunities, we would most likely gone on to win quite easily as their confidence would’ve dropped and ours risen.  Lesson learned.
