SAP Shepparton gala day cancelled

We are disappointed to advise that the SAP gala day scheduled for Sunday 20 May has been cancelled after the visiting clubs withdrew.  No doubt our youngest players were eagerly looking forward to testing their skills and we apologise to our players and families for the inconvenience. FFV is now reviewing opportunities for SAP groups.

GV Suns AGM - Friday 25 May

Our club Annual General Meeting will commence from 6pm on Friday 25 May at the main Pavilion.
Come along and meet with Board and to hear updates on current and future direction for the club. All parents, players and supporters are welcome.

Where do your fees go?
The best way to find out is to attend the AGM and check out the audited financial statements, this will give a break down of where your fees and money is spent and when.

The list of costs the club incurs each year seems endless - some may surprise you! Referees fees, for example, are available on the FFV website.

Ground hire, uniforms, coaches, new equipment (match balls and training gear), FFV licence fees, referees, trainer and first aid supplies, printing, paper, fees for lights for training, paint for the line marking machine, BBQs at training, stationary, technical director, etc etc

At our core we remain a club that relies heavily on the efforts of many volunteers on and off the pitch. No one is reimbursed for fuel, paper used at home for club purposes, the million phone calls, time etc.

Understanding the game

Our match reports often refer to some pretty confusing terminology for those of us not familiar with the game. This week we thought we would explain a few of them and what is expected of a player - and there are more resources available from the FFA website.

Any game of football, regardless of formation or playing style, can be divided into 4 phases:

  1. Ball Possession (BP) : this is the phase when our team has the ball and we are attacking;
  2. Ball Possession Opponent (BPO) : this is the phase when the opponent has the ball and we are defending;
  3. Transition to defence (BP>BPO) : this is the phase when we lose the ball and must switch from attacking to defending;
  4. Transition to attack (BPO>BP) this is the phase when we win the ball back and switch from defending to attacking.

Transition-to-Defence Phase

Here are some of the questions a player should be considering after his/her team loses the ball and needs to move into defence.
Immediately following the attacking team losing the ball, how do they react?
If pressure is to be applied high up the pitch, how long should this last?
What does the player nearest to the ball do?
What reaction is there from the players around the ball?
What effect does this have on the players away from the ball?
If pressure is applied what shape does the team adopt?
If the team are to drop back, how far do they drop?
Who/what triggers this decision?
How does communication play a part?
If the ball is won back how does the team react?
If the ball is lost, what happens next?

Transition-to-Attack Phase

Here are some of the questions a player should be considering after his/her team wins the ball and needs to move into attack.
When the ball is won, what does the player in possession look to do first?
How do the players around the ball react?
What is the reaction of the players away from the ball?
What shape does the team adopt in these initial seconds?
How quickly is the ball moved when won?
What areas of the pitch do the team in possession look to exploit first?
What type of strategy do the team in possession try to utilise?
Are the team set to quickly defend again should the ball be lost?

Match reports

This year our match reports will rotate through the squads with two reports each week. This will allow our coaches to give greater perspective on what they are focusing on during each cycle - and how well its working on game days.

This week the under 12 group travelled to play Bentleigh Greens. Over the last few training sessions the under 12 group has been working on the transition phase of their game.
  • If you are attacking  and lose the ball, you are immediately in the transition-to-defend phase (BPO).
  • If you don't win the ball during this transition-to-defend (BPO) phase, you get set defensively  and you are now in the defending phase.
  • If you win the ball back during transition-to-defend (BPO), you immediately move to the transition-to-attack (BP) phase.
  • If you win the ball back during the defending phase, you also immediately move to the transition-to-attack (BP) phase.
  • Having established an attacking pattern during transition-to-attack (BP) you are now back in the attacking phase.
  • If you lose the ball again, the sequence begins all over again.
Going into the games we talked about what was required from the players when moving from defending to attacking or from attacking to defending. We also talked about the need to quickly pass the ball when moving from defending to attacking to try and catch the other team off guard.

During the games both teams moved well from each transition phase, though at times they needed a bit of encouragement from the coaching staff. The ball movement by the players at times was good to watch with just our final pass not quite hitting the target.

After the game I spoke with the Gold team and congratulated them on their transition part of the game and highlighted some passages of play that really stood out and showed that when they work together they can match the other teams.  I also spoke to them about needing to defend facing forward rather than from behind.
This type of defending meant the team conceded several free kicks that resulted in pressure being put on the goalkeeper and conceding goals.

Over the last few weeks the under 16s have worked on putting pressure on the opposition in their backline to try and win the ball back quickly and also in the midfield. Going into the game against Bentleigh we emphasised the need to apply pressure on our opponents early and when we won the ball to move it quickly into our forwards.

We started the game by really applying pressure and were rewarded with a goal. However, we quickly conceded 2 goals due to desire to keep pushing forward rather than consolidate. Despite the setbacks we continued to create scoring chances due to the pressure we continued to apply. Unfortunately we gave away another 2 goals before halftime as a result of poor decision making in goal scoring areas.

Half time saw the positives of the first half highlighted - the pressure applied and goal scoring opportunities created, but also pointing out the need to be efficient and confident when we have the ball.

The second half saw the team really step up to the tasks required. The boys worked really well to pressure and frustrate Bentleigh and forcing them to turn the ball over. This pressure and the quick forward movement saw us create a number of goal scoring opportunities, however we failed to take advantage off them.

Unfortunately we conceded a goal with the second last kick off the game. In the end the 5-1 loss in no way reflected the evenness of the game. The boys were reminded after the game of the real positives they achieved in the game and if they played like that every week they will get results.

Get to know your club volunteers

Team Manager U12s - Marisa O'Halloran
When I'm not at the GV Suns I.... am working on carbon mitigation and adaptation (happy to explain!!)
Which AFL Team...  Geelong
Did you/do you play soccer... Yes
If yes what position...left centre back
Advice for the juniors ... Listen to the people who treat you with respect, and not the ones who hassle you from the sidelines     (Ed note: which would be in lines with the parents code of conduct!)
Something from your bucket list ... watching the Matildas win the World Cup!!!!

Can you assist in the canteen or on the BBQ?

The canteen and BBQ are always looking for assistance, if you have some free time see volunteers at the canteen.
Make sure you check the match day info email for your canteen roster.  If you can't make your rostered session can you pleeeeeease organise to swap with someone.
The canteen in the new pavilion is fantastic, warm and dry on a cold day and has a good view of the main pitch.

Do you see a gap in the club that you could fill?

Sporting clubs need lots of expertise assistance to work well.  Do you have some skills that could be useful? Physio, massage? nutrition? photography ('cause it's obvious that I'm (Lynne) not much of a photographer? building? Video editing? Ski jumping? Bus driving? China painting? just joking ... If you see a gap that you can fill speak to Nick Corbo our operations manager,
