Over the course of the season we look forward to sharing updates and ideas with you to give you an insight into our priorities and direction for the GV Suns. We welcome your feedback and input so please talk with us if you have any questions about the club and our squads.
GV Suns adopts Club model
Season 2018 marks a bold shift in our Club's philosophy. It has ushered in the Under 18s “Academy Program” under the guidance of Head Coach David Davkovski. These boys are a mix of 14,15 and 16 year olds who have been deemed to have the technical ability, physical maturity and attitude to do so. The goal is to accelerate their development and get them ready for senior football as soon as possible
Not by any means do we think of this group as “special” or privileged. Every player at GVSUNSFC is as important, but each will develop in a different timeframe and so our goal is to nurture players in the appropriate setting.
Therefore the club is moving from a “TEAM MODEL”to a “CLUB MODEL” that is less concerned with team results and sharply focused on player development in order to produce players capable of firing GVSUNS into a homegrown NPL powerhouse. We’d like to think of it as a football factory!
This may cause some short term pain in terms of team results but we think it holds us in better stead further down the track. For all new players and parents at the Suns in 2018 we look forward to the challenge and excitement of playing at the very highest level of club competition in Victoria. The players embrace the intensity and huge step up in standard compared to the local grassroots environment
We know this from the enormous growth of returning players.
What is the role of a GV Suns coach?
- Provide a physically and emotionally safe environment for all players. The coach understands the needs and characteristics of each individual. Practices are organized to minimize unnecessary collisions.
- Facilitate game based practices that relate to 1 core football skill/key aspect of the game or clearly defined session objective. We define a game as having a minimum of two teams, a goal for both attackers and defenders, a defined area, clear rules and a BALL. Ideally the coach creates modified games that relate to the session objective to maximize learning.
- Modify a practice or game to suit the players level using the CHANGE IT principle (covered on courses). Games and activities shouldn’t go on unchanged for 20 - 30 mins. The coach should CHANGE IT to ensure that players are continually engaged and challenged at their level.
- Create a positive and interactive teaching/learning environment. No one wants to make a mistake on purpose!! The coach should provide detailed and positive praise for the players or team that have done something well. It is far more effective for learning. The coach should also use questions to engage players and never gives direct instructions i.e. Shoot/Pass/Dribble. Players need to solve problems on their own and not have a fear of failing. Coaches need to stop telling and start asking! i.e. What could you have done differently?
- Observe and organize more than talks. A coach that constantly talks/instructs/shouts is not observing. How does the coach know if the players are implementing what was worked on in training? Which players or group have been involved in a good bit of play and why?

Rules and codes for on and off the pitch
As the season progresses we are often involved in some pretty intense matches with rather excited involvement by players, coaches and parents/supports. So the following is a reminder of what is expected of spectators, players, parents, coaches and administrators and it is explained in more detail in the FFV competition rules 2018 NPL Rules of Competition.
Keep out of the Technical Area.
The Technical Area includes the marked box around the coaches boxes. The following is an extract from the 2018 NPL Rules of Competition - and apply to all NPL matches across all age groups.
3.2.1. A maximum of 11 persons are permitted to be within the Technical Area at any given time during a Competition Fixture. Those persons may only include the coach and assistant coach, the Team manager, the substitutes and a registered health practitioner, sports trainer or accredited first aider as well as technical football and strength and conditioning staff.
3.2.2. Subject to Rule 3.2.4, all persons must remain seated within the confines of the Technical Area, except in special circumstances e.g., a physiotherapist or doctor entering the field of play, with the Match Official’s permission, to assess an injured player.
3.2.3. Players may leave the Technical Area to warm up, provided it does not interrupt the view of any Match Official.
3.2.4. Only one (1) person may stand up at one (1) time within the Technical Area.
3.2.5. All persons within the Technical Area must be wearing colours that clearly distinguish them from all players and Match Officials on the field of play e.g. a bib, jackets.
3.2.6. The Match Official may expel any person from the Technical Area at any time as he or she sees fit. The Competition Fixture will not recommence until that person has left the Technical Area and field of play to the Match Official’s satisfaction.
3.2.7. A player or Club Associate who is under suspension must not be present in the Technical Area.
Change room etiquette
1. Keep it tidy! We share our home ground with other clubs, and our away game facilities are provided by our host club so make sure you respect the facilities. How you treat the clubrooms says a lot about you - and no one at GV Suns is so important that they can't clean up after themselves.
2. Mobile phones, cameras and other mobile devices in change rooms.
Music devices are ok (although your team mates may have a different opinion about your musical tastes) but mobile phones, cameras and other recording devices are not permitted to be used in the change rooms. The change rooms are the one location where the Technical Director, your coach and team manager can speak with your playing group without interruption or distraction, so lets keep it that way.
3. No visitors, parents or siblings in the change rooms.
Again, the change rooms are a meeting space dedicated to the team, coach and team manager. If you are a visitor or parent and need to get in touch with someone in the change rooms, phone or text the team manager (given point 2 you shouldn't expect anyone else to answer their phone!).
Preventing injuries
The start of the season often involves hard grounds and more enthusiasm than match fitness. To avoid developing injuries that may come back to niggle across the season please listen to your body, tell your coach if you are sore so he/she can modify your training program and seek advice if pain persists.
