Under 13s

This week’s game was always going to be challenging with a few players in Japan for a soccer clinic, on holiday, unavailable or injured. Training was still valuable as we continued to work on the possession side of our game, with Friday being slightly more relaxed and the team taking the session themselves on creating chances and shooting drills.
Although we were up against it with our own team numbers down, this was a great opportunity again for 3 under 12 kids to come up and enjoy the challenges of playing up a level. From the off, Oakleigh kept possession well and scored relatively quickly but we also managed to score soon after to peg them back and even up the scores. That was where the game got much more difficult. Oakleigh stepped up a gear and piled on the pressure from here until the end of the game. They scored a few more goals but we stuck at it for the whole game when we could have easily folded. Credit to the team for not giving up.
We are all now looking forward to next week when we should have our full team available!
Under 14s

The under 14s went into this weekend's game with 5 players away, ill or unavailable. With this in mind, the focus for the team was centred around commitment, communication, and control. We talked before the game about how their commitment to attacking the ball, tackling, 2nd efforts and supporting each other through positive communication were things that they could control during the game.
We started the game with 7 under 14s, 2 under 15s and 6 under 13s who had just played. The team worked well for each other with a number of the senior players within the group working hard to support the younger players. Though we conceded a number of goals due to skill errors and decision making, the group continued to work for each other and not drop their heads.
A big thanks to Meagan, Declan, Brodie, Tutu, Gabriel & Andrew for stepping up from the under 13s, and to Zac & Izaak for stepping down from the under 15s.

During training this week we worked on controlling the ball when in posession, followed by a fun “You Know The Drill” shooting session on the Friday night. This week we welcomed back Izaak after 6 weeks away on holidays, however, we still had a players unavailable.
We commenced the game well, limiting Oakleigh to few goal scoring chances, however, we conceded 2 goals from poor decisions that our opponents capitalised on. Despite this, the team continually looked to attack and manage to have a number of shots on goal while working hard to deny Oakleigh the space and time to play the ball.
Halftime, we talked about continuing to pressure the ball carrier and restricting the space for them to play the ball into.
The second half was a reflection of the first, with Oakleigh score 2 goals from free kicks conceded in a dangerous area, and another that eventuated from a soft penalty decision. Again, we created a number of scoring chances which we could not take advantage of.
The end score line may have been 4-0, but the boys pushed Oakleigh all the way, which really shows the improvement made by the group over the year.
