Match Reports - 1 July
Under 12s - Tim Nelson
Again freezing conditions on the weekend for the kids.
Missing Miles, Kyan and Hamish, it was time for the young SAP kids to stand up, and didn't they prove themselves proud!! Mac - smallest kid on the field found plenty of the ball and created a lot of chances. Sam - In the second game scored a magnificent goal after beating 2 defenders and slotting the ball into the bottom corner! Dante - his pace and willingness to play multiple roles and do them well was a great effort.
As I said missing a few players forced me to play some kids in roles they were not use to, BUT, Marlee's work at Right Back was good to watch. She showed good confidence by even using a cheeky step over to go past a player coming out of defence.
In the second game I could not be more happy with Jeremy! After their best player slotted a goal in the first 2 mins with ease, Jeremy played the role of a tagger. It's safe to say their player barely got a touch after that. With a full squad this coming week, I can't wait to see what the kids dish up!
Under 12s - Scott & Zac Hutchison
The first game saw us lose 5-1 to a very strong Murray United team. At half time it was 2-1 and the team was high in spirits but due to a few errors Murray went away with the game despite the team playing very pleasing soccer. This game was Aston's first game for the Suns, he came on at half time and became a very good asset to the team.
The second game was nail biting as the final score was 2-1, 1-1 at half time. This was the boys' best game for the season as there team objective was to get 5 passes, which was succeeded multiple times. Every one played brilliantly over the weekend and hope to see the same this weekend

With no easy games in this league, playing a team below us on the ladder didn’t mean anything. Murray United had started the season slowly but had been holding there own of late and we had to be up to the challenge.
After a week off playing, our goal was to get our sharpness back. Wednesday’s training was all game play which got the team back up to speed. Friday was a short session but we worked on some dribbling, through balls and shooting. I was sure we were ready!
The game kicked off and we were out of the blocks in a flash, 3-0 up inside 15 minutes and looking comfortable. Murray scored the next goal and started to keep possession for longer periods making me change our formation slightly and add an extra defensive midfield player to support with defending. At half time it was still 3-1.
We went back to one defensive and two attacking midfielders after half time and this definitely helped us create more chances. After scoring first again we were pegged back by a second goal for Murray but this seemed to urge us on. The floodgates opened and we added goal after goal. Our build up play, pressing the opposition and teamwork were excellent. This was evident in the final score of a 10-2 win. We will not get ahead of ourselves as a tough away game at Box Hill is next!

Weekly training was all about Zonal defending, 1v1, 2v2, 3v3 defending. We went into this game with the focus of improving from the last time we played Murray.
We set a goal of conceding no goals. Defensively we achieved our goal and improved on our understanding of zonal defending opposed to man on man defending.
Well done - the big challenge this week is to see if we can maintain this defensive understanding.

v Murray United 15 July
Training this week saw our defenders/midfielders work on playing out from the back while the attackers focused on closing the pass channels and deny them the time and space to play the ball. With our Friday night session also including a fun shooting drill, which the team enjoyed.
We started the game on Saturday putting Murray under pressure and forcing several errors. This pressure was rewarded with a goal in the opening minutes. We continued to pressure the Murray ball carrier for the rest of the first half, which enabled our defence to easily repel any opportunities created by Murray. However, towards the end of the first half our concentration dropped which allowed Murray time and space to pass the ball.
Halftime, saw the a quick regroup and a reminder of the team task given at the start of the game.
The second half saw an evenly matched game between the sides with neither side allowing the other to create any meaningful scoring chances. Midway through the second half, we took advantage of a lapse in concentration by the Murray defence to score a second goal. With the team having to back up on Sunday we rested some of the team towards the end which caused us to lose our shape. This resulted in Murray pulled one goal back late in the game, but the boys hung on for a well-deserved win.
A great result, created from the pressure the team applied.
v Bulleen 16 July
Sunday saw us take the trip to Melbourne for our postponed game against Bulleen. A few late withdrawals saw us go into the game with only 11 players. Once again, the team task was to deny Bulleen the time and space to play football.
The game started with both teams putting pressure on the ball carrier which resulted in both teams turning the ball over. We soon found ourselves a goal down after losing the ball and being slow in our transition from attack to defence. Despite this the team continued to push forward and try to create some goal scoring chances.
At halftime, the positive attitude of the team was great, and they believed they were still in with a chance to pull a goal back.
The second half saw us create a few chances from some great through balls, but some quick thinking from the Bulleen goalkeeper meant we were unable to take advantage. We were unlucky to concede a second goal when a Bulleen player's cross from out wide deceived our defence due to the wind. Even though the team tried during the second half, which resulted in us giving away several silly free kicks, the boys continued to pressure Bulleen.
A fantastic effort from the team, who though disappointed with the result, remained positive about its performance.
Under 16s
Sorry - no report this week.
Under 18s - Stefo Radevski
Wednesday night saw Tommy G return to the coaching circles as Under 16’s coach and it was great to have him involved with the Under 18’s.
We focused on some hard running to start things off and then went into some passing & shooting drills to finish the night off. Wednesday wasn’t the greatest performance but having a week off the boys were a little sluggish. Friday Tommy G and Stuart Vance took the session with some passing/zonal/transitional work the focus of the night.
Saturday we faced Murray United who defeated us 6-0 last time around. To start the game we only had 5 Under 18’s players to select but like always the Under 16’s and 15’s were there to help us out…..and boy did they. Finally we got our first win of the season.
Elijah Brooker smashed home a shot/cross from 40 yards to draw us level after defensive errors saw us go 1-0 down. Second half was a tight tussle and Vinnie Barca got the all important second goal with a powerful header to put us 2-1. We held on till the end for a great result. The song was the loudest I have heard it sung this season.
It would be impossible to choose my best on ground as each player did the job required of them to get us the win. It’s the first time all season the boys have followed our instructions throughout the match and defended as a unit. All their hard work finally paid off. Big thanks to all the 16’s and 15’s boys that stepped up. Lets hope we can continue this form into our next game against Box Hill.
