FFV announces TIDC for Wodonga and Gippsland
It's great to see that our Murray United neighbors will also enjoy a local Talent Identification and Development Centre (TIDC) Program following the FFV's announcement that it will expand the programs to Wodonga and Gippsland in 2018.
The Wodonga TIDC program will be led by Nick Mammone and will work in conjunction with clubs to identify and develop talented players (2002-2006 Born) in the area for State and National representative squads.
Identified players will train each Friday night with their Wodonga TIDC Squad out of La Trobe University-Wodonga, while training at least twice a week and playing matches with their current club.
Further information about the regional TIDCs is available here. Please share this information with players who may be interested - they need to register online here by Monday 18 March 2018.
FFV confirms Country Boys teams for National Champs
FFV has also confirmed Victoria will have Victoria Country boys teams competing at the U13/U14 FFA National Championships in Coffs Harbour in 2018. No further details appear to be available at this stage.
Player Safety Update
Extreme Weather Policy - heat
Our early season games have been played in very hot conditions and this weekend is no different. The Referee decides whether a game should go ahead or be stopped once play has commenced and this decision is guided by the Rules of Competition and the FFV's Extreme Weather Policy as outlined below
NPL Rules of Competition
4.4. Weather Conditions
4.4.1. FFV and/or the Match Official may postpone, delay or abandon any Competition Fixture due to weather, pitch conditions such as but not limited to excessive heat/humidity, lightning or rain that may endanger participants health and/or safety.
4.4.2. If 30 minutes before kick off the temperature at the venue is 32C or above, water bottles must be made available to enable any player to take a drink during the course of the Competition Fixture. Permission of the Match Official to take a drink is not required.
4.4.3. If conditions are considered extreme by the Match Official, he or she may;
- allow a 2-minute break during the course of each half.
- allow additional drinks breaks in accordance with Rule 4.4.2 or otherwise;
- abandon the Competition Fixture, if in the Match Official’s opinion, it is unsafe to continue.
FFV Extreme Weather Policy adds further guidance for all sorts of exterme weather - heat, cold, wind and thunderstorms - and inclues the following:
Further to the guidelines provided in the Rules of Competition, Sport Medicine Australia recommends that should the ambient temperature (hot/dry conditions) reach 36C or above a fixture should be postponed to a cooler part of the day or to a later date.
If the forecast temperature one (1) day prior to a fixture is for 36C or above, postponement of fixtures should be considered as a real possibility.
Concussion Policy - its black and white!
Concussion injuries usually become worse as the swelling inside your head creates pressure, so it's not unusual for the full effects to kick in 2-3 hours after the incident. This means:
- There is no such thing as getting up and shaking it off.
- If you continue to play you are far more likely to sustain a further body injury eg roll your ankle or another head injury because your reflexes and balance are impaired.
- There is evidence of long term brain injury if concussion injuries aren't managed correctly.
- Staying on the pitch simply isn't worth it.
Is your teammate concussed?
If a player takes a knock and doesn't get up or doesn't get up as quickly as you would expect ask them four questions:
C - can you you hear me?
O - can you open your eyes?
W - what is your name?
S - can you squeeze my hand?
If they have problems responding correctly to these questions, feel nauseous, have slurred speech, are holding their head, irritable, or have headache...they have a concussion!
What should I do?
The GV Suns follow the FFA Concussion Guidelines. A player with suspected concussion:
- should stay down and wait for the referee to stop the game.
- cannot make the decision to stay on or come off the field - this is the responsibility of the team manager. (Further information will be provided to team managers).
- will come off the pitch and will require assessment by a medical practitioner (if your concussion is not managed by a medical practioner the FFA guidelines require you to sit out for two weeks)
Players, parents, club officials and supporters.
Our first priority is to ensure the safety and well being of players on the day and into the future. We encourage you to read the FFA Concussion Guidelines for a more detailed understanding that every player, parent, coach, team manager and referee should be aware of and in particular the following two extracts that will inform the decision for a player to come off and their return to play.
5. REMOVE FROM PLAY
Any athlete with a suspected concussion should be immediately removed from play, and should not be returned to activity until they are assessed by a qualified medical practitioner.
Players with a suspected concussion should not be left alone and should not drive a motor vehicle.
Only qualified medical practitioners should diagnose whether a concussion has occurred, or provide advice as to whether the player can return to play.
There should be no return to play on the day of a concussive injury.
7. RETURN TO PLAY
Following clearance from a qualified Medical Practitioner for the player to return to play, the player should progress through a Graduated Return To Play Program.
In all cases, the Graduated Return To Play Program provides for a minimum of 6 days before the player can play a competitive game.
A wee bit more about hydration
We have included some hydration information over recent weeks but the following is another useful guide that's pretty self explanatory!
