Count down to end of season

16 down, 11 to go, 3 at home and 2 weekends off

Our juniors are nearly two-thirds of the way through the 2018 season which means we are heading into a string of away games. After this Sunday we will play at home only twice more before the end of the season.

Fortunately the next few months include two catch up rounds on 7 July (middle weekend of school holidays) and 2 September - at this stage no games are scheduled.

SMILE AGAIN!  Team pics this weekend

After last weekend's failure, hopefully we will have some good weather for photos . Same drill as previous years
  • all players in their match kit ie orange shirts except for goalkeepers
  • no other cameras please
  • stand, smile, shoot and its all over!
We also hope to reshoot the other squads with their coaches and regular players that were missing from the earlier pics.

World Cup evening - Aus v France

Thank you to everyone who made our Aus V France world cup evening such a success and so much fun for all ages. There are a few pics on our facebook page and once again congratulations to Glen Wilson for his best dressed award.

Leading by example - parent & spectator conduct

The Shepparton Sports Precinct is home to three leagues (NPL, BASL and SJSA) and tens of school and regional soccer clubs. There are more than a few game days and training nights where we use the grounds one after the other or even at the same time - it requires some cooperation but it is great to see the Precinct come alive each weekend with hundreds of local and visiting players, coaches and spectators.

One thing all the leagues have in common is a commitment to a safe and enjoyable training and game day environment for everyone including players, match officials and spectators. While our rules and regulations may vary, our codes of conduct are all modelled on the same FFV/FFA templates which means the same standards apply to GV SunsSJSA and BASL players, coaches, parents and supporters and to the clubs we will visit over coming rounds.

Leading by example As parents and spectators we have a duty to set the standard we expect from our junior players - so if it's a red card on the pitch let's not allow or condone it happening off the pitch!

The list of red card behaviours include spitting, violent conduct and offensive, insulting, abusive or intimidating language and/or gestures - so lets lead by example.

If you have a complaint or grievance with a club official, coach, technical director, any of the volunteers that support the operations of the club or the conduct or other players, parents or spectators please make sure you share it with the Board (off pitch matters) or the Technical Directors (on pitch/coaching matters).
  • We can't fix a problem we don't know about
  • We have processes that can ensure a timely investigation and response to your concerns
  • We aim to handle complaints in an independent and confidential manner
  • Our officials and volunteers will decline requests to discuss concerns and grievances - especially while they are involved in their game day or training night duties - and redirect you to the Board and/or Technical Director(s).

Heel Pain? It might be Sever's disease...

by Lynne Weir

Heel pain is very common in junior footballers, there are a couple of GV suns players with this condition at the moment.  I'm an orthotist in Shepparton and we see junior sportspeople every year with this problem for heel cushioning, footwear advice and foot orthotics as part of a treatment plan for sever's.
  • Between the ages of 8 and 14 years the heel bone experiences a period of growth. This may lead to heel pain during or after physical activity.
  • Treatment includes modifying activities and learning how to manage the condition when it flares up.
  • Sever’s disease will resolve itself without treatment, and rarely causes long-term problems.

The pain can be under the heel, or at the back of the heel. It can appear to be erratic which means parents may initially not take it seriously. If your heel pain sounds like the list below early intervention will help get the symptoms under control sooner, and reduce time off the pitch.
  • heel pain during physical exercise, especially activities that require running or jumping
  • worsening of pain after exercise
  • limping – often in the morning, or during or after sport
  • a tendency to tiptoe.
If this sounds familiar then initially see a physiotherapist for treatment and a return to play plan (if the condition is severe enough,  time away from play is recommended).

You can also see me as mentioned above.  (this isn't meant as an ad for an orthotist, but information on a very common issue for junior sportspeople)

The Better Health channel is a good information source and the symptom list above comes from that site.

Match Day Video

If  teams  would like to record this week's game please contact Lynne 0428503157.
Please bring a 16 GB USB for the footage to be loaded onto and returned for viewing.

Let me (Lynne) know when the coach would like to view with the team and we can organise a temporary TV set up, until a permanent one happens.

Football for dummies

a little section for those of us who have no idea what the coach and the players (our kids) are talking about.

Direct, indirect or a penalty?

The key difference is that the team taking a direct free kick can kick directly for goal - an indirect kick must be touched by another player (from either side) before scoring a goal.

The referee will hold their arm up until the second player has touched the ball at which point the attacking team can shoot for goal.

Direct free kick

A direct free kick is awarded to the opposing team if a player commits any of the following seven offences in a manner considered by the referee to be careless, reckless or using excessive force:

  • kicks or attempts to kick an opponent

  • trips or attempts to trip an opponent

  • jumps at an opponent

  • charges an opponent

  • strikes or attempts to strike an opponent

  • pushes an opponent

  • tackles an opponent

A direct free kick is also awarded to the opposing team if a player commits any of the following three offences:

  • holds an opponent

  • spits at an opponent

  • handles the ball deliberately (except for the goalkeeper within his own penalty area)

Penalty kick

A penalty kick is awarded if any of the above ten offences is committed by a player inside his own penalty area, irrespective of the position of the ball, provided it is in play.

Indirect free kick

An indirect free kick is awarded to the opposing team if a goalkeeper, inside his own penalty area, commits any of the following four offences:

  • controls the ball with his hands for more than six seconds before releasing it from his possession

  • touches the ball again with his hands after he has released it from his possession and before it has touched another player

  • touches the ball with his hands after it has been deliberately kicked to him by a team-mate

  • touches the ball with his hands after he has received it directly from a throw-in taken by a team-mate

An indirect free kick is also awarded to the opposing team if, in the opinion of the referee, a player:

  • plays in a dangerous manner

  • impedes the progress of an opponent

  • prevents the goalkeeper from releasing the ball from his hands

  • commits any other offence, not previously mentioned in Law 12, for which play is stopped to caution or send off a player.

Match reports

This year our match reports will rotate through the squads with two reports each week. This will allow our coaches to give greater perspective on what they are focusing on during each cycle - and how well its working on game days.

Under 15s
Glen Wilson

During the last week we worked on playing out from the back as this has really been a struggle for us in games.  The guys are certainly getting better at retaining the ball, but there is still plenty of room for continued improvement.

Our opposition on a very cold and wet Sunday, was Bulleen.  They have had an exceptional year and are up near the top of the table, so it was expected we would have a very tough game.  The first half saw us play some half decent football which included a few combinations plays that gave us a couple of half opportunities.  Whilst we were doing okay when we had the ball, our time without the ball wasn’t so great.  We tended to allow a bit too much time and space to their forwards and this hurt us, as they were really quick and this saw them score 4 goals in the half!

At the break, we went into the rooms to get a small break from the weather……it gave us an opportunity to think about what was happening and how we may be able to turn it around…..I let them know that as far as I was concerned, the game was fairly even, apart from how we were allowing them to beat us in sprint back towards our own goal.  I asked them to forget the 1st half, lets treat it as 0-0 = a new game, and that if we do our best we could win the 2ndhalf.

And they did win…. 1-0 it was!
They were awesome, each and every one of the lads played their role in closing down space when they had the ball and then getting out into space when we had it ……the subtle changes by our defenders put those sprints in our favour, as we worked hard to close down not only passing lanes, but running lanes also.  It was great to watch……as the game went on, we were more likely to score than they were…this is what we need to do, each and every minute of every game……..that’s my challenge to them!
