Seniors and Juniors at home this weekend

Our Seniors take on Altona Magic on Saturday. U20s kick off from 5 pm, seniors from 7pm.

On Sunday our Juniors take on Box Hill United. Come on down and enjoy some terrific autumn soccer - catering onsite and free entry to all junior games. Don't forget your members pass for free entry to all seniors home games.

GV Suns AGM - 6 pm tonight

Our Annual General Meeting will commence 6pm on Friday 25 May at the main pavilion. Come along and meet with Board and to hear updates on current and future direction for the club. All parents, players and supporters are welcome.

Great turnout for Mental Health Monday

Thank you to the large number of players, coaches and parents who attended our mental health session on Monday night.

A very special thank you to Craig Carley for initiating the event and to Scott Keating for his very brave, powerful and inspiring presentation about his experience of mental illness and his road to regaining mental good health.  Thanks Scott for your time, openness and honesty on such a difficult time in your life.

If anyone is experiencing difficulties there are many resources available including your GP, your family, family friends, friends, your GV Suns family, Headspace, Beyond Blue, Kids Helpline...

Any budding sports journalists out there?

Any of our juniors interested in doing a short interview each week with a player for the newsletter? Contact Lynne 0428503157 if you're keen.

Beware - parking inspectors on patrol this weekend.

Over the past few weekends there have been more than a few irate parents boxed in by illegally parked cars. Kids and car parks are not a good combination so let's keep our kids safe and follow the parking rules.

Match reports

This year our match reports will rotate through the squads with two reports each week. This will allow our coaches to give greater perspective on what they are focusing on during each cycle - and how well its working on game days.

Fair to say there were some apprehensive feelings in the rooms prior to our game on Saturday.

The big flash Melbourne City were in town and they really looked the part, very professional in their sky blue Nike outfits.  They were exuding confidence and carrying that ‘air’ of expectation that they were going to win, not only win, but win easily.

During the week we worked on playing out from the back and this really came into play on Saturday as the guys certainly held their own and were able to control the ball for lengthy periods, even managing to create a few goal scoring opportunities.  Unfortunately we couldn’t convert any.
Our defence was tight and we didn’t allow too much free space at all - halftime 0-0.

At the break, the mood was very upbeat, as it should be in light of the first half we had just played – without doubt, our best half of football so far this season.  The focus in the second half was to maintain it, continue to create space by moving the ball by passing it rather than dribbling.

As the game panned out, the ball did flow from end to end somewhat with both teams playing some good stuff, unfortunately we were unable to convert any our chances and they did manage to sneak one in off the post……final result a 0-1 loss.  Although we play on a large pitch, this can be a game of inches!  Just not our way today!

Pre-game the key message to the guys was all about the R word = respect.
At the GV Suns it is a non-negotiable that we must respect the Referee, our Opponents, Ourselves ….pretty much everyone really.

However, my point as per earlier, was about the respect we get in return - our opponents were a bit cocky – not just today, but every week - they look at the fixture and think that they’ve got an easy win – all they have to do is turn up – and this means we have to go out and earn it ......we had to play well .....well enough to demand it!  WE DID THAT TODAY!

Well done all.

Team Manager U12s Orange Tracy Williamson
When I'm not at the GV Suns I.... am a business manager at a school in Cobram and for our own project management business

Who do you support in the EPL... Man United

Which AFL Team...  well a funny story about this one... when I first moved to Melbourne from NZ, at a job interview, that was going particularly well, they asked me which AFL team I followed.  Not knowing ANYTHING about AFL, as I am a rugby union girl at hear, I said tell me what team do you suggest I go for … Collingwood was the reply.  I replied Collingwood must be the team I go for then.  Subsequently got the job! Now I actually prefer Sydney Swans 9(given the choice)

Did you/do you play soccer... I played a bit of soccer as a child but just for lunchtime fun.

Sporting Highlight...My gymnastics team won a gold medal in the NZ championships one year.  That was pretty cool at the time.

Advice for the juniors …Listen to your coach, practice what they tell you.  Don't give reasons why you can't do something - take what they say on board and make it happen

Something from your bucket list ... Front row seats - Madison Square gardens - Boxing Match.  Think that would be pretty spectacular. I grew up with 2 older brothers - one was the NZ title holder in boxing and the other in the NZ karate team. King of in my blood you could say.

Something people might not know about you?...I love to travel, photography, gardening, interior decorating, cooking and art.  Most of all I love spending time with my family.  (Ed note; always looking for pics for the newsletter Tracy)
