Weekend game wraps

Sunday saw our boys take on Springvale White Eagles who in 27 games game conceded only 20 goals, less than a goal a game which is a great achievement. We knew we'd gave to be sharp to score goals. To lose 5-1 was very disappointing and our worst scoreline at home for the season; but it wasn't reflective of our performance which was for 40 minutes very good.
After conceding early in the first half we settled and played some really nice, fast attacking football and our goal before half time was a superb piece of killer pass/finish. There were many more great through balls played but their central defensive pairing was the best I'd seen bar the Northcote pairing. Time after time they anticipated and were really compact positionally.
The second half saw us play some of the best football we'd played for the year. We battered them and their keeper made a superb save to deny us an equaliser. Our flanks were tearing it up and our midfield was dominating possession. The game was played where we wanted it, in the opposition half.
Springvale were able to hang on and kept their defensive record going in this period but they got a real touch by our boys football wise, showing us that our core skills have improved markedly.
The last ten minutes was just poor defending, a lesson to be learnt. To not allow space for good attackers to hurt you. As I've said to the boys, stay above that baseline in performance, in training and in games. NPL punishes mediocre. We have to make sure we play for the whole game.
One game to go, some boys look really tired physically, some looked tired mid year and have the spring back.

A tired performance from the team on Sunday, with a few boys coming in sick and not 100% - it showed as we were 3-0 down in the first half. We talked about keeping the ball and trying to get one back early and we did when Brandon Giaccerini finishing off a great buildup.
The momentum was short lived as we were subject to some unstoppable shots from the opposition and could do nothing about it. We scored one late from Diesel Batey but losing 7-2 it was definitely our worst defensive performance of the year.
Thankyou to Cristian Corso for helping us on the day - he had a great game.

This week at training its been about winning the ball back quickly, keeping possession longer and attacking in central areas. The boys gave a good effort in the last game so consistency against the top teams is the aim to finish the season.
We started well in the first half and kicked off with a strong breeze, the boys were making good position and stringing passes together. We created some scoring chances then in the 17min Darcy struck one from outside the box and over the keepers head to give us the lead 1-0. In the minutes that followed the Eagles picked up the pace and scored goals in the 20, 21 and 28 minute marks. This was disappointing as two of the goals we failed to get goal side, hold or tackle opponents and cover their passing inside our 18yrd box, the result was 2 easy close tap ins.
The second half the boys kept pressing and didn't give up, Springvale only created a couple of chances with the wind, we changed the way they played this half. We showed confidence and should have scored from at least one of the free kicks we had close to the box.
We finished the game 3-1 down. Well done on the team game played again today and thanks to Lachie for stepping up, another good 1/2hr.

During the week we continued to work on retaining the ball as well as attacking from wide areas. In our game on Sunday against a top 4 team in Springvale. Things were very even for the first 20 minutes until another defensive error allowed the opposition to put their first goal in the net. Ten minutes later they got a 2nd goal through another error.
Although fair to say the opposition deserved to have their lead, the game was quite even. At the half time break we spoke about how things were going and the general consensus was things were going pretty well. We need to continue to provide options for the ball carrier and also get some shots off.
The 2nd half was much like the first - very evenly matched but with no goals conceded.
Unfortunately Hakan was sent off midway through the half and that just seemed to galvanise the team and we actually lifted our work rate and finished the game off looking more likely to score than they did.
In summary, I was quite happy with the effort of the lads as they played reasonably well against quite sound opposition.
Hopefully we can string it all together for a last hurrah next week.

Once again the weekend saw a number of players roll in late or not at all. So again the usual call went out to the under 15s with 7 boys putting their hand up. However, due to some ill-discipline in the under 15 game we were forced to make a couple of late minute changes.
The game started and we soon found ourselves behind 2-0 due to players not being awake to the quick ball movement of our opponents and our failure to keep our shape across the midfield and defence. But credit to the team, they fought their way back into the game after a few changes and were soon rewarded with a goal to Jayden. With the team spirit high, we continued to create chances through Jayden, Alou and Charlie, but lacked that finishing touch to put them away.
As halftime approached we gave Springvale 2 goals in quick time through lack of concentration and turning the ball over to the opposition in our defensive 3rd.
A quick regroup at halftime, saw us dominate the 2nd half and creating at least a dozen chances. Charlie Maude’s drive from the midfield saw us get into a number of scoring positions but for want of a final touch (and a natural goal scorer) and some good goalkeeping from Springvale they come to nought.
The second half showed that when the boys want to, they can play the football necessary to compete with the teams higher on the ladder. But, this has been too inconsistent with players not showing the commitment/attitude required to take their/the teams game to the next level.
One week left of a long and at times challenging season for both the players and coach/team manager/psychologist.

Our penultimate game and we were looking forward to this one as we believed a win was definitely possible against a team just above us. It was a strange feeling having a full compliment of under 18’s and only having room for one 16 player. Suprisingly SWE played with four of their under 20 squad so I can only assume they must have been short of 18’s.
The first half we played into a strong wind and as expected SWE used the wind to their advantage and went route one when they could. Our back four and the CDM’s contained them well and they were limited to long range shots which amounted to nothing.
Our game plan was to keep the ball on the ground and to utilise our wingers and fullbacks to get in behind them and provide opportunities to score. We did this well and in the first half we were constantly testing their defence and keeper. The breakthrough came from one of these chances. The winger sent a ball into Alou - our number nine - who controlled the ball and was then knocked to the floor. The ref awarded a penalty which Makuach converted at the second attempt after nearly giving me a heart attack when it was initially saved. Half time one nil to us.
We have been in this position before and have let teams come back into the game but we were determined this was not going to happen in this game. The boys were instructed to utilise the wind and attack straight away to keep them pinned back in their own half. This is exactly what happened to such a degree the linesman didn’t move off the half way line for 15 mins.
Eventually SWE came back into the game with some probing runs and had a few half chances which came to nothing. Our second goal came from our left back Liam receiving the ball and taking it down the pitch where his shot took a deflection and went in .
We had two more very good opportunities to score and we put both down to bad misses which we will never speak of again. We controlled the game for the remainder and the match ended two nil to us.
One more game to go against a very good in form Oakleigh but we are looking forward to the challenge. Thanks to Alou from the 16’s, Todd from the 20’s and Liam who earlier played for the 15’s.
