Annual General Meeting
6:30 pm Thursday 28 April
RSL Shepparton

All members are invited to come along and learn more about the Club, meet the Board and ask questions. We are keen to show you what we are achieving on and off the pitch and our prospects for the year ahead and beyond.

Shab's Shorts

Thank you all for a great weekend. I would like to single out Paul and Pat who stepped in to fill the void of absent coaches on the weekend - thank you for your help.

The football played on the weekend was very pleasing. Keep up the great work all and continue to improve each week.

Regards, Shaban Mehmet
(While Reno is overseas, Shaban is assisting with the Technical Director role.)

Enjoy 8 games at home this Sunday

All junior and senior games are at home this Sunday, so make the most of your free 2016 season family pass to enter this weekend's GV Suns Seniors' home match.

To pick up your pass phone or email Fiona and collect it on game day or at the gate.

Please remember, even though these are day time games, there are strict rules associated with our liquor licence and to make sure we meet these requirements and everyone stays safe:
  • an adult must accompany anyone aged 14 years or younger to the game, and
  • younger supporters who arrive unaccompanied will not be allowed entry until their adult guardian comes and collects them at the entrance gate.

Reno's reflections

While overseas, Reno is providing some valued insights on preparing for games.  This week Reno covers the second of the three Rs of football - Reflection / Rest / Rehearsal.  This week Reno covers the final R - Rehearsal!

Rehearsal by definition means a form of practice.

Our young players need to rehearse (practice) their skills everyday. Juggling the ball, dribbling, trapping and kicking should be performed daily as an extra to training. Balance and coordination for football is difficult to develop without this. This type of practice would be physical rehearsal.

Mental rehearsal is equally important it requires players to form an image or a visualisation of what is required on the field. A player needs to rehearse what is required of them on the park or in their role. What it feels like to strike a quality pass or to dribble out of trouble.

This visualisation needs to be rehearsed 24/7 particularly at night two to three days before the next game. This is a very good thing to do before bedtime, a much better way to get proper rest.

Our training sessions are usually based on a theme. Players need to take particular note of the key moments that their coaches talk about. These moments are the required elements for rehearsal.

Cheers Reno

ANZAC Day Service

Thanks to Nick Kalafatis and Edward Uniacke for representing GV Suns at Monday's ANZAC Day service in Shepparton.

The boys did a terrific job laying the wreath and recognising the contribution of our past and present service men and women.

Sports Trainers at home games

From this weekend, we will have a Sports Trainer at each game. The Sport Trainer has level 1 & 2 sports training qualifications, and is first aid qualified.

There are 3 trainers on a rotating roster with one present each week for home games.

What can the Sports Trainer help with?

The Sports Trainer provides a crucial link between the coach, player and health professional and can assist with:
  • game strapping (ankles, knees, wrists etc),
  • massage for leg soreness (hamstring, calf etc) and,
  • injury management during the game.

Sports Trainer’s make sport safer.

  • Implementing appropriate injury prevention protocols
  • Preparing players for competition
  • Providing the appropriate immediate management of injuries
  • Providing immediate crisis management of severe injuries
  • Informed referral of injuries to a more qualified health professional for further advice and management
How can you access the Sports Trainer?

On-field injuries - On game day, the trainer will rotate between games being played and teams preparing to play - and first priority will always go to on-field injuries if/when they occur.

Pre-game assistance if you need taping, massage or some other pre-game assistance from the trainer you need to
1. advise your coach so they can then be in the rooms to assist
2. be at the ground early.
If you leave pre-game needs until just before game time expect to miss out!

Thanks Shep Council

A huge thanks to Shepparton Council for helping us present our grounds at their best for our visitors this weekend.

Over the past week Council has repaired most of the nets, fixed most of the wheels (one still to go), filled in sunken trenches around the ground, cleaned the gutters of dirt and removed the leaves and branches from between the tennis and soccer pitches.

To help us and our fellow user groups (SJSA and GNEFA) keep the grounds tidy more bins are available at the grounds and a skip is available in the cage near the shipping containers. Let's use the bins!

Its up to us as players, parents, coaches, team managers and supporters to do our bit to make sure we respect the equipment that has been provided and ensure it stays in good condition all season. No one is to hang on the nets or cross bars, use them as a hammock or generally be rough with the webbing - you can expect a long day on the bench if you are caught.

In the news - GV Suns SAP kicks off

Our youngest squads had their brush with fame with a visit from the Shep News at their first training session last week.

Their article and a great photo appeared last Wednesday - so make sure you grab a copy and ask our young talent for an autograph - it will be a collector's edition one day!

U16 and u18 games rescheduled

As we have foreshadowed in previous newsletters, from time to time game times and even whether a game goes ahead can change in the week prior to game day.

Late last week we received confirmation that the Under 16 and Under 18 games originally rescheduled to Saturday would in fact be deferred to the September school holidays.

At this stage the dates are in the FFV Schedule as Sunday 4 September but we will keep the players informed of developments and confirm exact dates closer to the day.

Please make sure you save foxsportspulse and check times and locations from this source.
Congratulations Shaun & Kirsty
Congratulations to Shaun (U15 coach) and Kirsty Kane on the arrival of their daughter Elsia May Kane last weekend.

Importantly this session is for everyone young, old, male and female. Please encourage your friends and family to sign up or get a group together if you want some 'safety in numbers'.

What do you need? Sports clothes, shoes you can run in and 45 minutes of your time.

More info to follow in next weeks newsletter but for now please register your interest with your team manager.

Weekend game wraps

Under 12s
Tommy Giuliani
This week saw the under 12 Suns take on Heidelberg United at Olympic Park in Melbourne on Saturday afternoon. After after a thrilling 3-2 loss against South Melbourne FC, the boys bounced back with a strong performance winning 3-2.

The boys worked on directional first touch during the week and I was very pleased to see players in wide areas, such as Edward Uniacke and Mitchell Grumley, take on and beat their opponents with good body shape  and their first touch forward and beyond their opponents. We work really hard on these core skills and it was great to see progress. These two boys gave us great drive on the flanks as a result. There were many other examples as well.

In spite of the good things it was still below par compared to previous weeks in terms of effective possession and speed of ball movement into our attacking third. Our first half kick off was an example, where we went backwards all the way to left back. Ineffective possession - wrong way for no reason. We also played our worst half for the year in the second half.

This week we play Bulleen Lions who have only conceded ONE solitary goal for the year.  I'm sure we will rise to the challenge and produce our best performance.

I don't talk to much to the boys after the match. This moment should be enjoyable regardless of the result. It should be fun. All the intensity should come on training nights - thats where it all happens for the boys, the continued to work on the National Curriculum set by FFA and they really lap it up. It' s amazing to hear the boys answer correctly all the questions we throw up. Nick C can testify to this as getting us present during the pre match address.

Keep up the great work boys.I'm positive that there will be several players "Talent identified" in this group.

Under 13s
Shaban Mehmet (Shaban subbed in for Matt this week)
A proud day to be involved with these u13's on Saturday. Pre match our focus was all about self belief, and boy oh boy did they BELIEVE!

After going a goal down, for the first time this year our heads didn't go down, we continued to play football, we continued to fight, we continued to believe in ourselves.

We got back on level terms through some great build up play and team work. Then the highlight of the game - as a SAP coach its what we are training for and working towards, the one moment of brilliance, that one instance of individual genius! Teng received the ball on the edge of the area, gets his head up and accesses the situation, decides to lace the ball into the top corner and gave us the lead.

You could see it in their faces, you could see it in their eyes as the belief came flooding back. We can play football, we can enjoy the game. We finished up winning the game 2-1.

No matter how bad you think it may be, believe in yourself and you will achieve.

Under 14s
Paul Nieuwenhuizen (Paul subbed in for Nathan this week)
The team was tasked with trying to stay compact when defending (which proved difficult on such a large pitch) while also looking to attack the opponents in their defensive 3rd of the ground.Against a well organised opponent the players struggled to find rhythm in their play. We soon found ourselves 4 goals behind due to some poor team play and a well drilled Heidelberg team.

With the half time break, we where able to make a few positional changes which enabled the team to be lot more settled in the second half and prevented Heidelberg from adding to the score line. We also created some goal scoring opportunities. This also meant the team was able achieve the task that had been set for them. The positives from the 2nd half performance should set the team up for this weekend's game against Bulleen.

Under 15s
Pat Kielty (Pat subbed in for Shaun this week)
The under 15's played the league leaders at their home ground so we knew it was going to be a tough match. The game started and immediately it was played at a very high tempo. The first half was an exciting end to end affair with both teams having chances. I suspect that HUFC were surprised that they were being matched in every department by our boys and their frustration began to show. They played a very high attacking line and constantly tried to beat the offside trap but our back four did well and were a match for their strikers.

HUFC scored first from a dubious free kick from just outside the penalty area. GVS responded very quickly with a well worked set piece goal by Vinnie Barca from a free kick. We then scored again from an excellent corner delivered by Fraser Gosstray which Jordy Leocarta put into the net from inside the eighteen. The first half ended at 2-1 to GVS.

The second half started in the same manner, a fast flowing high tempo game and both teams had clear goal scoring chances that were either saved or missed. With 6 minutes to go HUFC got the breakthrough and scored a scrappy goal from inside the penalty area. Our boys responded well and for the last five minutes we had them pinned back near their penalty area with every one of their players defending.

The game ended HUFC 3-2 GVS. The under 15 team should be very proud of their performance because on another day we could have come out winners and we very nearly did. They played the top team who had home advantage and gave them their biggest shock they have had so far this season.

Thanks to Fergus Wilson from the under 14's who agreed to sit on the bench and come on if needed.

Under 18s

Under 20s
David Davkovski & Matt Maiorano
Good overall performance against Brunswick on the weekend.

We started Abraham from the u/16's at left back and what a great job he did for the team. The boys went down early however, this week, we made our way back into the match through some really good effective possession and great composure in front of goal. We conceded our goals through set pieces which is not what we like to see happen so we shall dedicate a little more time on that this week at training.

Well done to Ramos, Hussey, Cooper & Todd who were all on the senior bench.

Next game Ballarat at home

Seniors
Nick Kalafatis & Serkan Aktas
