Tough weekend for the club, playing against a club that's been around for nearly 60 years. South Melbourne's professionalism and organisation is something we can all aspire to as a club.
The results didn't go our way but progress is evident across the board. Lets build toward Heidelberg on Saturday and train with the intensity and focus we expect here at the GV Suns.

The game confirmed that this group will be very competitive. Again we conceded in the final 2-3 minutes of the game to go down 3-2. Unfortunately for our boys, the ball was out of play and the goal shouldn't have stood. Some of our players were clearly aggrieved and whilst I love that mentality we should always respect the match officials. One day we'll be on the right end of a poor decision!
Our gameplay was very good, our core skills stood up to Souths high pressing game and we were able to execute our own pressing game on South Melbourne. It's fantastic to see two teams committed to playing a possession based game-style.
We'll continue to work on our ball retention and habits that enable us to execute our rapid passing chains into our attacking third.Well done boys on another good football performance!⚽️

The under 13s went down 5-0 to a very strong South Melbourne outfit, but there were a lot of positive signs to take out of the game. Firstly, the effort shown by all players was a welcome sign and our own errors proved costly handing them easy goals.
We were unlucky not to get on the score sheet and a special mention to Olivia Sarron who in her debut for the under 13s was given the 3 coaches votes for her effort. Caleb Enders had his best game for the season and also received votes.
The boys were disappointed with the result but their performance was quite good after losses in previous weeks. We can't wait to get back out there and a clean sheet is what we are working towards in the next few games.

A tough game this week, we have been working on defending, attacking in central areas and attitude.
The boys kept a good attitude for the game, unfortunately our opposition were a strong physical team which upset our confidence not allowing us time on the ball. We found it hard to build more than three or four passes and the structured attack we strive for turned into long balls to the front three.
We were glad that as tough as it was the boys did not give in on BPO pressure and chased til the final whistle. Well done to the Suns players for staying disciplined when a South Melbourne player was sent off.
Keep your heads up, train hard and stay positive for the coming week against Heidelberg United FC.

The boys worked hard all week on both our defensive pressing in the mid-final third as well as trying improve on our decision making in the final third and working on getting crosses in to the box early from wide areas. The intensity & quality at raining was very high, unfortunately we were not able to translate this to the game on Sunday.
We were competitive throughout and there certainly was not much between the sides, with our high defensive pressure forcing them to consistently go long. However, a big disappointment was that our own mistakes and our poor execution of the basics (first touch, passing etc.) would prove costly. Other than corners & free kicks we didn't look like scoring and we rarely got crosses, if any, in from wide areas that we had focused hard on in Friday's training. There was no fluidity and cohesion in our play that was evident in the previous fixtures. It was simply a bad day at the office.
Despite our below par performance, we were always competitive and never out of the game, only conceding the second goal with the last kick of the ball when we were chasing an equaliser. We will lift our heads, continue to work hard, learn from this game and kick on and improve for the rest of the season.

During the week the focus at training has been BPO - denying our opponents time and space. Even though we let our opponents score a soft goal in the first 30 seconds, the team quickly regrouped to work on the team task to deny Sth Melbourne time and space to play.
The back 4 combined with our 3 midfield players to close down the space and passing opportunities. With Hammad chasing and applying pressure on their back line our opponents turned the ball over a number of times. Due to this pressure we managed to create a few chances before again conceding a goal after 25 minutes and another on the stroke of half.
Again the team started the 2nd half well, putting pressure on the opponents and continuing to deny them time and space to play football. Even though Sth Melbourne scored another 2 goals - 1 own goal (a great header from Willie) and the other a David Beckham style switch of pass from one side to the other.
The team can be proud of their performance on the weekend. Once again thanks to Lucas Enders, Jordan Lecoata and Kaine Humphries from the under 15s.

Pat Kielty & Shaban Mehmet
The majority of the first half was a pretty even affair with both teams having scoring opportunities. However a general lapse in concentration in the last 10 minutes resulted in South Melbourne scoring three quick goals all from set pieces. This is something that will be addressed in training.
The second half was a very even affair with both teams scoring. We had two excellent chances in the second half that were very, very close and on another day would have given us two additional goals. If we had not switched off for ten minutes in the first half the score would have been a lot closer.
Fatigue was a factor and thanks to thanks to Elia Lulerhe, Willie Sauiluma, Alou Kuol and Liam Kielty for stepping up and congratulations to Jayden Crupi, and Hamud Agog for making their under 18 debut.

Overall a good performance that wasn't reflected in the score line, however there were encouraging signs again from the boys. We started very lively in the first half creating 5 good chances on goal, but simply could not convert. Our defence was solid also and the midfield 3 of Trisitan Zito, Rocky Papalia and Makuac Makuach.
We were very busy and really wanted to get on the ball which was good to see. As the game went on we tried different ways to break them down however after we made our changes the game simply got away from us and our boys tried their hardest but could get that crucial 'away' goal. Box Hill then pressed and broke through. Again what seems to be a bit of an weekly occurrence, it's not the other team winning it's actually us giving the match away through simple mistakes and easy turnovers but we as a group have recognised this and will continue to work hard on these issues.
Well done to Tom Corso from the 16's coming on and smashing a 20 yard cracker, Tom looked comfortable on the ball and if he keeps developing the right way will enjoy some more time in the 20's as the year goes on.

Our communications are changing
We hope you are enjoying our weekly newsletter. We are committed to developing the Goulburn Valley's amazing talent, so we enjoy going beyond game day results to provide some insights into our progress from week to week.
At the same time, more than a few volunteers have been rebuilding our club website and tidying up our social media.
Our GV Suns - official Facebook page will provide a place to promote our club to our members and the wider football and GV Suns community. Our GV Suns - juniors facebook page will change name shortly and become GV Suns - operations. This page will be closed to the public. We will invite all members to join the page and it will provide a place for us to address all manner of operational queries and alerts - from lost property to game day transport and reminders and even recommended reading and links for players.
But if you were expecting us to use social media as our primary comms tool - you will be disappointed! Even Facebook and Instagram require account owners to be at least 12 years of age. Our membership includes players who are yet to reach double digits so it would be very irresponsible for us to make Facebook or any other social media our primary communication tool. Instead, we will continue to rely on a combination of email, the newsletter and pre-match reminders. We will also share our news and updates through the Facebook pages .
We hope this combination meets your needs across the season, but if you have any other ideas or skills that could help improve how we keep everyone informed and build our GV Suns community please share them with us.
