Smile - team photos this weekend

During warm up/before kick off you will be asked to assemble for a team photo. Please help us to make this as painless as possible!
Some basic rules
- Only our photographer will take photos - no other cameras and parents to distract our talent please!
- Photos will be taken during warm up - if you aren't there, we won't wait!
- When you are asked to assemble - listen, act and smile!
If everyone cooperates this can be a quick and painless exercise and we will share the photos with players and families.

Couple of tough games for the kids at the weekend.
Our defence again was under pressure but really stood up well on multiple occasions.
I challenged the kids to "beat their direct opposite player" which falls back to 1v1 and not having 4 players sucked to 1 players with the ball. Miles again solid in defence while Jai's talk could be heard well from the sidelines.
Marlee's and Aiden's job in goal was great. We created a couple of nice chances in game 2 but a little bit on panic proofed or Achilles heal. Our organisation around stoppages is improving every week which is good to see the kids starting to work that out.

It's like watching grass grow, improvement every week out of the kids especially on the physical side, having kids believe in them selves knowing that they can challenge bigger kids and win the ball is great to watch.
Fantastic effort last week let's keep improving kids.

Wednesday’s training session started with a “Strength and Conditioning” session then straight into a small game. As we hadn’t played the previous weekend I thought it important we get back to what we are here for, playing soccer! Friday we got back into specific skills and game training. We worked on some first touch drills and opening our body when receiving the ball which gives you many more immediate options to play the ball both forwards and backwards.
This weekend’s game was a joy to watch! I saw the best team in the league play some very attractive, well controlled soccer. Unfortunately, this was at the expense of our GV Suns. They worked much harder off the ball than we did, moved the ball on quicker (less individuality), and defended in numbers and as a team. They had probably 70% possession and made us look very average with a thumping 5-1 result to them.
On completion of the game I think we finally had some realisation that our current effort and lack of attention at training is unacceptable, and if we aspire to be as good as the Northcote City team we had just played, we need to change our ways.
Time to draw a line in the sand and work together for our common goal. I am sure all the players are looking forward to Wednesday nights training with much more intent!!!

Sunday's performance confirmed to me that these boys are making huge strides in the quality of their football. The game was of a very high standard as we knew of Northcote's ability in this age group. Last year they won this fixture 6-0 and dominated the game.
These boys are starting to believe in their ability to play out from the back patiently. They're really knocking the ball around now and looking really confident - in fact we matched them in every facet of the game and I thought a draw was the least we deserved. After going 1-0 down we pushed numbers forward looking for an equaliser and conceded again. Then we scored a goal of the highest quality- a super combination play. The last 2 minutes Northcote were rattling, locked in defending corners and lucky to hang on
Many of the boys had their best games for the year and our back four looked really comfortable in their roles. Nice and tough in the tackle and composed on the ball.
There was really good movement to get on the ball in the midfield and the attacker were always dangerous on the break. We hustled really well to win the ball back as well when we were out of possession, pressing quickly..
Again training standards have been high and haven't slipped back to what I know wasn't good enough earlier in the year. The lads are being encouraged to continually raise the bar. Credit to them, they've been really coachable in the last 8 weeks. I'm predicting a really strong second half of the year if the keep their heads down⚽️??

The focus for the game against Northcote was trying to play out from the back and then combining to get the ball into our forwards, which we have worked on at training over the past week.
The first half saw us of to a slow start, with our midfield being drag out of position constantly by the ball movement of Northcote. This put the team under great pressure and prevented us from putting any pressure on the player with the ball. However, the team defended well as a unit to limit any real goal scoring chances created by Northcote.
Halftime came with the teams locked at 0-0. A real positive from the first half was that the tasks set for the game were being achieved. I reminded the team about the need to move the ball quickly and to their teammates' advantage. We also changed the way our midfielders and forwards were to defend when Northcote was playing out from the back.
The second half quickly saw us being a lot more purposeful with our pressure and ball movement. We quickly benefited from this with a goal scored on the counter attack after winning the ball back in our midfield. The pressure applied on the ball by the team meant Northcote was pushed out to the wings and could not create any real scoring chances. We created a number of counter attacking chances but were unable to score.
Another great performance by the team that is starting to grow and believe in their ability to match the other teams.

With the next 9 games at home we wanted the boys to have a strong mentality of team work and work ethic. We wanted accountability, we wanted the boys to challenge everything. We want every team that comes to the GV know how hard a place is to come.
The boys came out and gave us everything. Nathan and I could not fault the desire or work ethic of the team. Well done boys 1 down 8 to go.

Game day wasnt the best result for the Under 18's. What started with optimism and a real chance to get a result playing on the main pitch, soon headed south very quickly. We set the team up to be defensively strong and also quick in attack. High pressing and moving the ball into our number 9 and allowing our midfield to support on all occasions. Unfortunately it didnt turn out that way.
We were really flat from the outset and looked very jaded and fatigued. Northcote City ran us ragged and didn't allow us any time nor space to play in. They pressured all over the pitch and definitely came to play and to win. We conceded 3 goals in the first half but could easily have been more. Their passing and moving is the best I have seen so far this season and probably explains why they sit atop of the PS4 NPL East Under 18 Ladder.
As a team collectively we struggled under the pressure and our passing and touch did go astray which is something we will need to discuss and rectify at trainings. The second half is normally where we perform best and the boys spring to life but 2 quick goals from Northcote City corners due to lax marking saw them take a 5-0 lead. We were definitely more competitive in the second half and even though we conceded a sixth goal we at least did manage to put some pressure on their defence and have some shots on goal but unfortunately none on target. It was a disappointing day all round but we will take all the negatives as an opportunity to improve ourselves and improve our performances going forward.
Special thanks to TC. He spends most of his time in the 20's but was nice enough to give us a hand. Also Vinnie, Tommy, Connor and Kane who stepped up from the 16's to help us out. Greatly appreciated to those boys. They stepped in easily and did not let myself or Glen down. Shout out to Kane who gets my BOG for the game. Intensity levels were high and chased down every ball and competed whole heartedly on every occasion.
