SMILE! Team photos continue....

We managed team pics for U12,13 & 14s but with so many playing across more than one age group we were unable to schedule the U15s, U16s and U18s. Hopefully the good weather continues Sunday week and we will take pics of the older age groups and reshoot the U14s with their usual goalkeeper rather than James - the space filler!

World Cup 2018 begins next week!

Join us to watch the GV Suns U20s and Seniors at home (kick off from 3 pm) and make sure you have your tickets for the main event - Australia v France on the big screen from Russia. To confirm catering please RSVP by Friday 8 June 2018 5.00pm

Match Day Video

The U12s have booked the camera for the next home game on Sunday 17 June 2018.  Thanks heaps to the parents for coming to see me.

If any teams would like to record this week's game please contact Lynne 0428503157.
Please bring a 16 GB USB for the footage to be loaded onto and returned for viewing. Let me know when the coach would like to view with the team and we can organise a temporary TV set up, until a permanent one happens.

Player strips and uniform - update

If you have any outstanding items please send an email confirming the details to GV Suns Secretary and we will respond to you directly.

When I'm not at the GV Suns I.... work in the family business, Micria Automotive, in the office.
Who do you support in the EPL... Manchester United
Which AFL Team...  Carlton

Advice for the juniors … players nee to always remember to have fun, enjoy the competition.  It's not always about winning, more about personal development as a player and as an individual
Something from your bucket list … to live in Sorrento
Something people don't know about you … I have been a volunteer with the GV Suns since 2015, starting as a team manager.  I joined the board in 2016 and have been actively involved in fundraising and in the canteen since that time. The GV Suns provides a great opportunity for regional soccer juniors to play at NPL level, without the sacrifice for families of multiple trips to Melbourne weekly.

Match reports

This year our match reports will rotate through the squads with two reports each week. This will allow our coaches to give greater perspective on what they are focusing on during each cycle - and how well its working on game days.

Under 14s v Northcote
Tommy Giuliani

It was another very good football performance on Sunday against Northcote City. The boys have worked really hard on every facet of their game at training in the last month.Key session objectives have been effective possesion, attacking play in wide areas, combination play in central areas and controlled posession in the middle third. There’s also been a sharp focus on switch of play/changing point of attack.

Gameday serves as observation time for coaches at Suns and the players for me have had a magnificent run. There’s been good development and growth - they look so comfortable on the ball and are making the right decisions out on the pitch. I keep telling them it’s a brain game. A poor decision is the equal of a poor first touch or pass and the ball movement is the fastest and best playmaker on their team.

We really dominated our opponent on the weekend. The game was played in our attacking half and we continuously pushed them back and created scoring chances. We could easily have scored 6 or more with some better finishing and some missed penalty calls.

Just as pleasing was a clean sheet. The challenge for the group now will be to maintain their high standards they’re achieving and find another level again.

Under 18s v Northcote
David Davkovski

Our game against Northcote was probably our biggest challenge this year, they were big and fast players, generally we either play against fast teams or big teams not really both  at the same time.  We were very pleased with the team as they realised the pace of the game and adjusted quickly.

The tempo didn’t change throughout the game which was very good exposure for our young team.  We are still at times having lapses in concentration and it’s during this time is when the opposition score a goal. Apart from these mental lapses our boys are trying to play, their trying to play through teams and also try to play out of danger every time.

My team has been instructed not to just boot the ball, it’s important for them to be players first, to learn how to play during all 4 moments of the game. Of course at times this is a tough pill to swallow however when these boys are still trying to play football in the last 10 minutes of a match it means they have brought in and want the develop the right way.

We certainly aiming to continue for them to develop in the best way possible for the rest of the year.

Meet our coaches

GV Suns Under 16s

Nic name  Newy

Your early years

Where were you born? Where did you grow up and go to school? Born in Australia and grew up in Melbourne (Wantirna South) and Holland. Went to school at St Judes then Xavier College and then St Joseph’s College in Ferntree Gully.
Do you come from a soccer (or other sport) family or did you discover it? Dad played for Willem II Tilburg in the second-highest tier of football in the Netherlands before moving to Australia where played for Ringwood Wilhelmina in the Victorian State League. Injury cut short his career but dad never pushed me to play.
Where did you begin your soccer/sports career? (First club) Ferntree Gully Soccer Club until age 15 and began my senior football journey from age 16. (photo is from my first senior game)
What position did you play? Why? Started on the wing (7 or 11) because I was the fastest kid on the team. Spent the majority of my career playing a forward/midfield role. By the end of my career I was playing the easiest position – defence.
What was the toughest or hardest thing you had to learn as a player?  The step up from junior level to senior level and learning to reuse my left leg after a nasty break.
Which clubs/comps have you played at/in? What was the highest level? Any big highlights?  Heidelberg and Melbourne Croatia (Knights) in the old NSL (National Soccer League). Majority of my playing career in Victoria’s top two divisions with Fawkner, Dandenong Thunder (South) and Langwarrin. Finished playing with mates in the lower divisions at Ashburton and Knox Park (Ferntree Gully) and then player-assistant coach at Ashburton.
Do you/did you have a pre-match routine or superstition? Always arrived 2 hours before game time. Would have a bit to eat and a cup of tea. Dressed from the bottom up.
Did/do you play any other sports? Any big highlights? How does it inform how you coach? Athletics  - 400 & 800 metres. Represented Victoria for five years at junior levels  and competed at A & B senior level athletics.
War injuries or niggles?  Broke my left leg in 2 places
Operations on both knees and ankles.
Broke my nose 4 times
Where is home now?  Shepparton

Your thoughts on coaching

Which of your coach(es) (in any sport) had the greatest impact on you? Why? Freddie Bunce. My first senior coach at Ferntree Gully and my youth team coach at Heidelberg.
Which coach(es) do you admire? Why? Any coach that plays football the way it should be played – The Dutch coaches from the 1970s & 80s – Johan Cruyff.
Are there any players you played with or against that stood out? Why? Charlie Yankos. Played for Heidelberg and Australia. Lead by example and never was negative towards his teammates.
Why are you a coach? What made you want to take on the challenge? Do you have a coaching philosophy?

To help develop the kids along their football journey. To try and impart the knowledge I have gained over my 40 plus years of being involved with football. To play simple attacking football. “Playing football is very simple, but playing simple football is the hardest thing there is” Johan Cruyff
What coach training, accreditation, licence etc have you completed   C Licence
What pushes your buttons? (late with no excuse, lack of commitment, bad language etc etc) Lack of commitment, poor sportsmanship - “When you win, say nothing. When you lose, say less.” or “Win with humility, lose with grace, But do both with dignity”

A little bit more about you

Which leagues and clubs do you follow?  AFL – Richmond,
EPL – Manchester United,
Dutch Eredivisie - Ajax Amsterdam
Family? Married to Lindy with 3 kids – James (14), Elisabeth (Lily) (11) & Rolf (6)
Pets?  None – all deceased
When I’m not coaching I’m… Working at SPC Ardmona, chasing after my 3 kids and trying to complete my uni degree.
My last dinner would be…  With family and friends
What are you aspirations for the GV Suns and soccer in the GV? Eg In five years time, GV Suns will …. That the club will start seeing the kids who began the journey 5 years ago playing in the senior squad
Something else you want to share? I have 2 brothers and 2 sisters. They all played sport at the highest level. We consistently stressed our parents.
Something we don’t know about you?  I enjoy eating triple or quadruple salted licorice.
Do you have an inspiring quote or message? “Technique is not being able to juggle a ball 1000 times. Anyone can do that by practicing. Then you can work in the circus. Technique is passing the ball with one touch, with the right speed, at the right foot of your team mate”. Johan Cruyff
