More of the same at training this week. Defending with an important element of heading, something that we have struggled with all season. Coming up against South Melbourne was always going to test our defence but no-one could be prepared for what was to come.
We came up against a team at the top of their game who were clinical in nearly every department. The first half wasn’t too bad apart from a 5 minute spell where we conceded 3 goals. We were second to every loose ball and even second to our own passes quite often as South Melbourne were very quick to close us down. The second half was more of the same as we finally went down by 7 goals to nil.
In summary, we did try to keep playing the right way which was pleasing but our overall effort was below par. Every player needs to give 100% all the time, starting with training this week!!!!

Wednesday training focused on positioning wide in attack, crossing the ball into the box and creating scoring opportunities. On Friday Craig delivered an attacking session with the team.
Pre game talk was centred around our defensive shape with midfielders getting compact behind the ball and once in possession play the ball wide and create chances in the box. It was a combination of passes that saw our goal created this way, a good finish from a good cross after the midfield forced a turnover.
Apart from 2 avoidable goals the team's defensive shape stood up to most of the pressure the opposition was creating. Well Done 14's

This week saw us come up against one of the powerhouses of the NPL competition in South Melbourne.
The team task for this week was winning the ball back quickly and looking to create attack moves from wide.
The team worked hard during the first half at winning the ball back quickly after losing possession. This pressure, restricted South Melbourne’s ball movement and goal scoring opportunities. Upon regaining the ball, we looked at using our wingers to create attacking moves from wide areas. Despite conceding 3 goals in the first half the team was playing well and achieving the tasks set at the start of the game.
The second half began well with the team looking to press forward, however, this opened us at the back and we conceded shortly after the restart. The result was a loss of focus in the team task, and the 5C’s (commitment, communication, confidence, control & concentration) that has a group we had worked on over the last month.
While the result was disappointing, it was pleasing to see the boys recognise that their performance as a team was not at the level that they know they can achieve.
